Francois Belleron
Sir Francois Belleron
Francois Belleron is the bastard child of a Casteaux nobleman (of the House Desespere) and a farmer’s daughter in a rural province. He grew up in a small village, more comfortable around the cows and wheatfields of the north of the realm. He was a quiet child, not always happy in the company of others, and was very contemplative and thoughtful. Nonetheless, he drew others to him with his compassion, and ability to listen to others. He was an insightful child, often knowing when to make himself scarce, and when his mother needed him around.
The village of Montmarche was his home till the age of eight, when the seneschal of the nobleman arrived. There were whispers of civil strife, and the noble family wished to secure their rule by protecting their lineage. Francois was taken to a secluded monastery, where he studied and learned under the clerics of Diosar, who were preparing him for the potential to take a position within the family. He also studied under the mage of the family, who were keen to test him for any talent. He was a quick study in both academia and the magical arts.
Two years passed, and at the age of twelve, the civil strife was over, and the noble family had no need any longer to protect their lineage – but he could not be returned to the village, too many people knew his name. He was sent instead to the manor of the seneschal, away from the clerics he knew well, and never to see his mother again. At the manor, he became a favoured servant, learning the ways of nobility and how their culture worked. By the age of fifteen, he was ready to move again, this time heading alongside the seneschal and his household to work in the royal city. A mere six months passed, and a court intrigue left the seneschal utterly bankrupt and humiliated, and Francois was made homeless, taking refuge amongst the whores and broken people of the capital. The brothel where he made his home was the Purple Prawn.
This was a dark time for him, but it was not without warmth and love. His adoptive “family” protected him from unwanted advances amongst the underworld, in the slums and docklands. He ran errands for them, helped arrange liaisons for them, and often ran messages or helped them avoid reprisals from pimps or violent customers.
Nonetheless, he found himself slowly slipping further and further away from the teachings of the clerics he had found so calming, and wondering how his life had gone from the rural, idyllic peace of his youth, to this clawing, scraping desperation for survival. And yet there was still the insightful, quiet and compassionate soul that remained despite the grime and muck around him.
One winter, after a poor harvest, when he was seventeen, the docklands became a place of terror for his “family”. The madame of the brothel was murdered brutally, and the establishment was purchased by one Captain Mercator. The brothel was not the same after that. Before, it had been dangerous, but Madame Gretel had kept the women and men as safe as she could. A year of terror began, with Mercator breaking the unspoken protection that Francoise had been given. Without direct threats being made, Francoise started to work in the brothel properly. It was a terrible year, which only ended with the arrival of Lady Elena Arborea, a knight of the Order of the Ribbon. She was an old friend of Madame Gretel, and she reinstated the protection of the Order, over the Purple Prawn and its family.
There is an old tradition within the Order of the Ribbon, that they can take a member of a brothel under their wing, to train them in the ways of knighthood. Lady Elena saw something special in Francois, and she took him with her to the coastal town of Paisible, a tranquil settlement under the direct protection of the Order of the Ribbon. It is a pleasure town on the coast, where wealthy travelers arrive from across the world, to sample the delights of Casteaux and its art. The brothels of the town (called lounges) are famed for the way they respect their employees, and for the choice that people can have for who they serve. On the hills above Paisible is the Chateaux d’Soupire (Castle of Sighs), where the paladins and knights make their abode, and Francois spend several years between the lounges of Paisible, and the castle itself, training and studying under the paladins and the madams both.
Now aged twenty six, Francois Belleron (now proudly using his mother’s name), has been named a Squire of the Order, and has been dispatched in the name of the Order, to right the wrongs and protect the dispossessed and vulnerable across the land. With the skills of love, peace and compassion he intends to bring the tranquil world of Paisible and Chateaux d’Soupire to the rest of the world, so that all may know the peace and passion he has had for seven or more years.
