The Wastes of the Condemned

The Wastes of the Condemned are a region of wastelands within the NecroVerse inhabited entirely by the Lost Souls of those who left this mortal world with discontent. It is a place of desolation, of hopelessness, where its only inhabitants are doomed to wander its dry expanse for eternity.

Geography

The Wastes are incredibly dry and rocky, with no water. The only soft soil they have within their boundaries is shifting sand which changes position whenever the winds see fit. Overall, the Wastes are vast, spanning thousands of miles in each direction, even some ways underground where the lurkers in the dark hide from the harsh, howling wind.

Localized Phenomena

The wandering spirits in the Wastes of the Condemned slowly become consumed by its hopelessness and take on more ghoulish forms. The new features they receive often reflect the losses they had in life or anything they lacked to live full lives.

Fauna & Flora

Nothing has ever lived in the Wastes of the Condemned, mostly because of its nature as a glorified holding cell for those unfortunate souls who were never collected by the Order of the Reapers.

Natural Resources

Several expeditions have been lead over the centuries, all fruitless and only bringing back a small handful of survivors, all of which have said that there is nothing there but death.

History

There have been tales told of people coming into the Wastes and never coming back, instead doomed to walk an eternity as a dry husk of their corpse. This is how the Wastes got their name. Parents tell their children as cautionary tales about it so as to tell them not to wander off, sometimes telling them if they did not behave, they would leave them in the Wastes. The truth is that the Wastes of the Condemned have existed since before the Great Separation. The Wastes were created as a temporary solution by Ba'alNecro for the plague of Lost Souls that came after the exile of Bei'elNecrum. However, although its original reason for being has since gone, it still functions the way it did then. Whenever a Lost Soul is not collected for one year, it is pulled forcefully to the Wastes, no matter the distance or planar positioning, to wander endlessly and without tiring. From there, a Reaper who dares enter the Wastes can collect any Lost Souls they find. However, they should be careful, because being ripped from where one was before and being forced to wander an empty wasteland forever would likely make one a fairly vengeful spirit. During the Great Separation, the Wastes of the Condemned were pulled into the NecroVerse along with all of its Lost Souls. However, over the millennia, the true purpose of the Wastes was lost to antiquity and became the subject of folklore for ages.

Tourism

The Wastes of the Condemned, unsurprisingly, do not get visited by tourists. Ever. Any wise person would know that a place called the Wastes of the Condemned is probably dangerous and any decent person would warn off anyone who said they were going there for any reason.
