Saltfish

Saltfish are a species of deep sea fish that form a thin shell of crystallized salt around their bodies. Though native to the TempoVerse, some have been caught and placed into farms in the BioVerse. Saltfish typically live near the bottom of the ocean, but they are very commonly hunted through deep sea fishing. Despite their unusual look, Saltfish are considered a delicacy across the Multiverse, mostly because of their salty shell. Their shell is a very common ingredient featured in many recipes around the TempoVerse, and due to their high availability they have been introduced across the whole Multiverse.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Saltish are not small by any means, but they are not quite large either. Their shell provides protection in exchange for lower mobility, though their strong fins and jaw make up for that in spades. This also provides a challenge for deep sea fishers, as often their bait is gobbled up by these voracious creatures.

Growth Rate & Stages

Saltfish can live for up to five years at the seafloor, but when brought to lower water pressures or lower saline concentration, they can only survive for a short time. A saltfish typically reaches physical maturity at around four weeks old.

Ecology and Habitats

Saltfish are deep sea fish, meaning they stay near the seafloor, typically in areas high in saline concentration.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Saltfish feed on smaller fish as well as anything they can gobble up that drift down from higher up. They also gravitate toward salt deposits on the seafloor.
Conservation Status
Since saltfish and other valuable living resources became very commonly sought after, there have been laws put in place by the Hub Council to prevent overfishing, hunting, and poaching so that things like the saltfish do not go extinct.
