Church of Kalastaar
The Church of Kalastaar centers around the worship and following of the fish god Kalastaar. He is one of the primary gods of the Triton race, but is also well-known and followed by many who have chosen fishing and sea-voyaging as their profession.
Churches of Kalastaar are typically found wherever water flows. Towns that border lakes, rivers or oceans typically have lavish temples and churches dedicated to the god.
Structure
Those who run and manage the churches of Kalastaar are known as "Kingfishers" and are referred to by such followed by their first name. Those who devote themselves to the church give up their last name as part of their show of faith.
Those who follow the church of Kalastaar are known as Seamen, or singularly as a Seaman. Because of their dedication, the followers and leaders are typically completely oblivious to the double-entendre joke referring to semen.
The structure is a fairly simple one, the Seamen come to the church to worship or offer sacrifice. The Kingfisher will guide them in their show of devotion. It is very common to receive words of wisdom and guidance after offering worship to Kalastaar, from the Kingfisher. Many Seamen will show their devotion early in the morning in hopes that the deity will tell them where to fish and what spots will bring in the most catch that day.
Given the timing of the Seamen's visits, the church is typically open early into the morning hours and closes shortly into the afternoon. They are also open during the weekends at similar hours since a fisherman is always working.
Culture
The Church of Kalastaar is built on hard work and dedication to the various bodies of water. Those who follow the religion are encouraged to maintain the cleanliness and sovereignty of the lakes, rivers, and oceans around them. They take the treatment of their water resources very seriously and are usually strongly against practices that may damage or pollute those natural features.
On the other hand, people who follow a religion are very positive. There are few rules or punishments that are enforced and distributed by the church and the leaders and followers, although sometimes gruff given the intensity of a life as a fisher, can be very welcoming and positive.
Public Agenda
The primary objective of those who follow the Church of Kalastaar simply want to maintain and take care of whatever bodies of water they have been gifted in their region. They don't look to make converts but do get involved in public and political situations when it is in-reference to their nearby lakes, rivers, and oceans.
Assets
Jewels, Gems, and Precious Metals. The Church of Kalastaaar has a strong appreciation of pearls. Offerings of pearls and pearls as decorative features in their buildings are highly valued. Along with pearls, Geodes are a major part of their features. Although they aren't necessarily a precious metal or stone, they are also keen on shell-decor. Basically, anything that comes from the sea.
Weapons & Equipment. The symbolism of the church is often depicted with tridents and a netting background. Oftentimes you will see physical representations of these weapons/equipment in their buildings.
Tenets of Faith
Those that follow the Church of Kalastaar are pretty laid back. The god Kalastaar himself did not make many rules for those that wish to follow him.
Work Hard and Be Rewarded. Every good seaman knows that fishing is hard work. Those that are lazy will be fruitless in their endeavors, those who work hard will be blessed with much.
Patience Equals Profit. As one of the creators of all living things below the surface, Kalastaar knows that in order to catch fish you must have patience. Thus, the virtue of patience and waiting is key to religion.
Devotion Required Weekly. Although a god's power is determined by those who have committed themselves to their religion, it's required by Kalastaar that every believer show their devotion through worship or sacrifice at least once a week. Those that do not will not receive the blessings of Kalastaar and will need to re-devote themselves to him if they wish to be his seamen once again.
Protect that Which I have Given You. Kalastaar has gifted the creatures on the material plane with the creatures abundant in the lakes, rivers, ponds, and oceans. No gift should be taken lightly and Kalastaar has entrusted the people to maintain the quality and sanctity of the natural resources to ensure they can flourish and grow.
Worship
Kalastaar requires that anyone claiming to follow him is required to renew their devotion once a week. Those shows of worship and devotion are depicted as small acts and small sacrifices.
Those who worship Kalastaar show their devotion in three ways.
The Singing of Sea Shanties. Seamen are taught a number of shanties and songs that have a rhythmic tune to them that pleases the ears of Kalastaar.
Sacrificing. Kalastaar appreciates the sacrifices of his people. Primary sacrifices include fish and sea creatures that were caught during a seaman's recent fishing voyage.
Donations. Donations are very similar to sacrifices in that a person is giving something up to the church. Donations of valuable shells, pearls, and Geodes are commonly accepted and appreciated by the church. And of course, coins and currency are always welcomed as well. If the particular church has an emphasis on assisting those who are hungry and in-need they will often times accept donations of fish and seafood as well.
Priesthood
Those that wish to fully dedicate themselves to the Church of Kalastaar show their dedication by renouncing whatever last name or tribal title they had before. These members are known as the "Kingfishers" and are leaders within the church. Larger churches will have multiple Kingfishers whereas smaller ones will often send off any new recruits to found new churches and temples in other areas throughout the region.
Kingfishers have the responsibility to maintain the everyday workings of the church, upkeeping the facilities and assisting the seamen with renewing their devotion to Kalastaar.
Kalastaar will speak through the Kingfishers when necessary. He will inform the people of the things to expect in the coming season as it pertains to fishing, and will call them out if he feels the waters around them are being mistreated.
Granted Divine Powers
Kalastaar's blessing will typically revolve around increased spawning of fish during a season or direction on where his followers should fish in order to return with the highest catch that day.
Kingfisher's are blessed with magical prowess as it pertains to various aspect of the seas and the fishing profession. These magical gifts are through Kalastaar and are to be used in defense of the church and assistance of the Seamen. Spells commonly gifted include.
