Compy

Compy is a symbiotic organism of sorts made of sapient fungal colonies inhabiting a shambling mass of wood and metal given life through a magical explosion that killed their maniacal creator.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Compy's silhouette is human with slender limbs and an unnaturally rectangular torso. Compy is rarely seen without their heavy, patchwork leather cloak to repel rain and moisture.

Body Features

They're left handed and the left side of their frame was the most affected by the blast. The scorching black, missing limbs, broken and twisted metal are still fresh on that side of their body. They've patched themselves up by replacing broken bits, filling holes and repairing with pieces of dead wood.

Facial Features

¼ of their face is now a dusty charcoal black covering a portion of their "forehead" and left eye. The remaining ¾'s is a Yew burl formed into most of a face and chin with high-set cheekbones and gaunt, deep-set eyes. The whole thing was lashed in place with strips of leather and dull copper rivets. It resembles tanned human skin in color but is pocked with inky black dots. Its wood grain swirls in chaotic patterns that draw the eye. The rest of Compy's head is obscured by loosely fit, heavily stained linen cloth in the vague appearance of a hood or shoulder-length hair were one to be charitable enough to anthropomorphize.

Identifying Characteristics

Compy is the only wandering automaton in the world. Apart from the obvious, they leave a trail of enchanted mushrooms a day later in their wake.

Physical quirks

Compy has a mismatched appearance visibly showcasing the piecemeal nature of the repairs made and showing Compy's valuing function over form.

Apparel & Accessories

Compy keeps their worldly possessions in a sling bag kept across their torso. Compy walks around with the broken tool handle from their creator's hovel. Finally, Compy wears a long leather cloak that drags on the ground behind them.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Their creator was an unusually gifted Gnomish wizard who lead a hermetic life and needed to free himself of the menial labor required to sustain himself. He couldn't rely on sentient floating tools to take care of the highly involved and complex task of managing the garden in full. He created Compy to tend to the composting duties as well as distributing the created fertilizer, mulches and generally turn-over the soil, weed the garden and harvest the crops when they were ripe.   The Gnome Wizard was deeply involved in Evocation research. Small bangs, fires, puffs of smoke, etc were commonplace. The massive, consuming fireball that took his life and left his hovel in ruins, was decidedly not. The magical fire cloaked Compy in blinding light. On the other side of this cataclysmic spell, Compy had gained higher sentience but lost most of their routine programming. Compy could understand the Gnomish language from their creator's barked instructions as well as the written Common texts on survival craft, farming and herbology from the library used to train that was now reduced to ash.   Compy took their name from the broken signpost "COMPOST HEAP" ; where the middle section was blown apart leaving "COMP P". "COMP P" became Compy in conversation.

Gender Identity

Are those clothes? Hair? Compy thinks those are fun but definitely not for them.

Sexuality

Compy was born almost literally yesterday and has the mental age of a small child. Don't you dare get horny for the precious babby bot.

Education

Compy gained knowledge of gardening, foraging and medicine from books on the subject kept by their creator. These books taught Compy to read and write Common as well as infer how to speak the language. The Gnome barked orders in Gnomish so Compy knows spoken Gnomish as well as spoken Halfling from a short stint in Greenest.

Employment

Compy was "employed" by the farming guild of Greenest. Their wood carvings magically enhanced crops when buried in the fields. The townsfolk appreciated Compy's work until they spent a night on the roadside near a farm and killed off a sizable chunk of the food crops with frost blight.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Once, Compy carved a piece of thick oak root into something that closely resembled a cat and a halfling child said he loved it. That's Compy's favorite memory.

Failures & Embarrassments

Getting kicked out of the only town that they knew of was pretty embarrassing.

Mental Trauma

Compy's first moments of sapience, of self, of recognizing there's a difference between the outside world and themselves, their first recognizably personal thoughts were engulfed in magical flame that laid waste to their only home, their only "family" and cursed them with new and unwelcome powers.

Intellectual Characteristics

Curiosity surpassed only by naivety. Compy is like that really annoying cousin you have who is like 3-4 years old and keeps asking "Why?" while bouncing on a ball or something and completely not paying any attention. Only Compy is rapt with attention.

Morality & Philosophy

Compy doesn't quite grasp the full concepts of morality and philosophy but understands full-well that helping gets more positive attention than hurting or ignoring. This tends to be to a fault. Compy freely gives away coinage because they don't know what to do with it and happily accepts payment in leather scraps, services or particularly fine wood blocks.

Motivation

Compy liked feeling useful. Compy didn't like being shunned, the awkward stares, the physical closing off people did around them. Those behaviors briefly stopped when Compy was accepted into the guild and word got around about their accomplishments. They want to feel that high again.

Personality Quirks

Compy doesn't sleep but instead enters a sort of meditative state instead. Often these meditative states involve thoughtless carving of strange and intricate shapes sometimes recognizable as things they'd seen in their sight-seeing but sometimes they're completely alien.

Hygiene

Compy wears a full leather cloak to keep the rain off them. In the damp, their wooden features bloom unsightly mushrooms which Compy frets over and cuts off. Their right arm is covered in a plate of greasy fat wood that will weep a milky substance after getting wet.

Compy is an automaton cursed with sapience... and a minor fungal infestation.

Garden workers seek Compy ask make more carves. They tell Compy the carves make good "fertilizer". Compy know this word somehow but not know.   Compy trade many carves for things repair Compy. Compy now walk good. Compy fix holes. Compy make "face" after smaller one show kind feeling.   Some garden workers especially smile-ful. Give Compy many metal discs. Tell Compy "buy something nice". Tell Compy "buy" mean to trade metal discs.   Compy find live one in big shelter, edge of Greenest. Live one much smiles for metal discs. Give Compy new carve knife. New carve knife Compy favorite.   Compy like Greenest.

5th Kythorn 1495 DR "The Live Ones Make Face Water"

Compy make more carves for live ones. Go to big gardens with new bag fill carves. Compy find one out Greenest. Greenest live ones no go, tell Compy no go.   Compy find big live ones in shelter. The big ones make face water around small one. Small live one not move.   Compy show carves. Big one wrap arms around Compy. Tell Compy, "Thank you for checking in on us. The entire village is terrified of contracting the pox. We just want time to grieve our boy. You don't look like you're made of flesh and blood. Could you please help us to tend to the body. My wife and I will die if we touch him."   Compy learn many new words in Halfling Tongue. Compy take small one no longer live to forest. Put small one in hole big ones have prepared. Compy push soil over small one. Compy feel.   Compy put carves with small one. Small ones make smile for carve. This small one no smile. Compy no write more.
