Wilmira Fairy

The Common Fisher Fairy

Written by Alchemical Tea

"One of my favorite Fairies, personally. The colors on them are just so captivating that I must sit and watch when I see a group of them. They’re surprisingly vicious when they want to be. When it comes to gathering food, they don’t hesitate to rip other creatures apart. Given that they are so small, though, they don’t have much in terms of natural prey. Fierce as they may be, most just end up as frog food. I wonder what a Wilmira tastes like? Frogs love them, so they must be among the more delicious insectoids.
Occasionally, however, I have observed a swarm of Wilmira on an organized assault against a common bullfrog. A rather sizable bullfrog, mind you. I can only assume this frog had been terrorizing the nearby nest for a while. This must be rare behavior for Wilmira as, prior to this, I have not seen this before. I understand that Wilmira are capable of Corvid-like intellect, but actually organizing an attack on a massive monster was unheard of to me. It was akin to a group of Iron-Sworn gathering to battle the Man-Eater of Kazaka. Damn did it provide some good entertainment, though. I even grabbed meat-on-a-stick from the tavern near the pond I was sitting at.1   The Boldorn can make a competition of anything. While drawing the illustration in my journal, a couple of the stone-folk came by, they looked like bounty hunters or something. Bron and Ingve. They stopped and sat next to the pond, arguing about their next direction. They seemed to be lost. Honestly, I was too. After bantering back and forth for a while, and calling me Knife-Ear numerous times. We relaxed and watched the Wilmira on the pond. They were hunting for frog eggs and tadpoles. The Dwarves got out their silver blocks and chisels, ready to make bets on the most successful Wilmira hunter. I got out my coins and we began. We chose Fairies, I chose the purple one, for no reason other than that’s my favorite color. The others chose theirs. After an hour period, whichever Wilmira got the most eggs and tadpoles got the pot of money and was named king of the Wilmira hunt games such is the banter of the Boldorn. If the fairy you chose was eaten by a frog, however, you lost your bet completely. Bron was the first to be disqualified, as his fairy dove into the water and never came back up. My fairy got 5 tadpoles, a relatively good haul. Ingve clearly knew more about these fairies than he let on, He chose the fairy that fished out 2 eggs and 10 tadpoles. He was a good source for this entry.”   1: Sayla’s End of Roads not Taken Tavern, just south of White Gorge in the East Sea territory, small Elven community. Very nice Elf woman runs the tavern, pay her a visit.   ~Aerendirk's Personal Quote on the Wilmira Fairy, Aerendirk Lithiceline's Catalog of Fairies, Vol. 2, p.137-138

A common sight throughout the continent, Wilmira can be seen anywhere flesh clean water can be found sleeping amongst crude grass nests of flittering above the sparkling water. Woodsmen through the land see Wilmira as a sign of a healthy water source while their absence indicates disease and corruption.

Dietary Needs and Habits

A predatory fairy, Wilmira Fairies can be seen diving headfirst into the water their lacey wings folded tightly around there body as they descend into the deeps before twirling in the water and plunking forth minnows and fish eggs upon the tips of crude spears crafted from reeds and small bits of wood by the tool using hunter.

Additional Information

Social Structure

A vocal fairy, the Wilmira use a complex system of clicks and tweets to communicate with its swarm mates, typically being made up of 30 to 40 members, these calls have studied by naturalists and scholars for decades with accounts of over 200 unique calls resting upon the bookshelves of any mage interested in the social structure of fairies.   Beyond their talkative nature, the Wilmira can be observed sleeping together in clusters in a display of mutual protection against predators such as the toads and frogs that often pluck the faries from midair with their sticky tongues.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

While not typically deemed especially useful beyond their aesthetic value whereby wealthy merchants and nobles encourage the colorful fairy to take up residence in their gardens in recent years alchemists following the naturalist school of study have taken to experimenting with the jelly-like substance that surrounds the eggs of the Wilmira whom they speculated could be quite useful in the production of antiseptic ointments.
