The Rite of Naming

Execution

On the third day after a child is born, the child is to receive its name. A time of great importance to all involved, the child's parents well aware of the magical power hidden with in names will locate a passing traveler. If no traveler is available and elderly relative or a man destined to die will suffice. The parents will present the yet unnamed child to the person who will present the child it's name. The bearer of names will then examine the child, looking into the newborn's features, examining the strength or weakness of its body, examining the landscape around the ritual site for inspiration and once finished the bearer of names will whisper the chosen name into the ear of the child.

The bearer of name will then return the child to its parents. The name is not shared with the parents who will decide on their own second for the child but the child's True Name remains the purview of the child and the bearer of names. If the bearer was a traveler, they will move onward under the oath to never speak the child's name to anyone. Its this that elderly relatives, soldiers, and those destined to die are prefered. While in Instengrad death is not in and of itself a method to prevent the sharing of names for their ways to make the dead talk. The methods of talking to the dead are beyond the skills of most and therefore it is prefered that the bearer of names dies soon after the ritual in the eyes of the parents but such is simply a matter of luck for if the parents take matters into their own hands and murder the bearer of names directly they will face the wrath of the spirits in ways that no mortal can truly protect against.
