What are Dark Lords?

Religious origin
The title of Dark Lord and the very concept of Dark magic obviously have a religious origin. From the early days of the Roman Republic, the word Dark has been used to refer to heathen and heretical practices against the gods protecting the city of Rome. However, the concept quickly evolved beyond religion.   Nowadays, Dark mages are people who commit atrocious evil crimes, acts against nature. Dark crimes are not simple crimes; you will recognise them by the way they make you recoil and shrivel with disgust. Classic examples are human sacrifices and magic controlling the weather—but only for a time before it inevitably turns back on its caster.   However, to truly be a Dark mages you do not simply have to sin once but have to repeat these terrible crimes. More than anything, Dark magic is a lifestyle.

Dark Lords
Dark lords are even worst than simple dark mages because they gather a following and incite others to follow them in this life of crime and debauchery.   Most Dark lords are local crime lords ruling over a gang of thugs, too focus on their atrocities to truly have elaborate or long-term plans. Some Dark lords however have schemes that make them especially dangerous as they endanger everyone around them, for example by planning gigantic rituals fueled by human sacrifices with the potential of devastating the entire kingdom.

"Politicians"
Other Dark Lords hide behind a political façade, attempting to claim legitimacy and gain more followers among the discontent of the kingdom, while in truth only earning to have the political protection to let free their terrible Dark hungers. Those are the most dangerous Dark Lords, for they can spread their evilness through the country like a terrible and contagious miasma, dragging everyone they encounter down to their level.   This is the case of the current Dark Lord attacking our good King Bernard while hiding in Prussia.

His Majesty protects us
It is our duty as the subjects of the King of France to assist His Majesty in His glorious duty of preserving the morality of the Kingdom and in taking down evil Dark Lord.

Great overview. I love the description of dark magic being something that makes you recoil.

I love the quote "Dark magic is a lifestyle" followed by a picture of a backstabbing! That's peak!

Biased article, it's missing the true statement that dark lords are hot.

Every single time I've looked at one of your articles or browsed one of your worlds I have had SUCH a good time. You are excellent at breaking down concepts and bringing humor and inventiveness to topics that people rarely stop to think about. I've never seen someone actually explain specifically what a dark lord is, even though in theory it could mean anything? Anyway I love it.

Thanks a lot for this comment <3   What are dark lords/dark magic is something I often have to content with in my novels, since like you said it could just mean anything. It is rather important for me to define them, as I want to consider the politics and magic around it more seriously - especially as the non-Christians societies I depict don't have the same concept of "evil" as us.   I've used slight variations of this in all of my stories/ worlds, but I mostly always say that dark magic/dark lords are defined by politics.

Whenever I hear ‘Dark Lord’, I think of your worlds. Nice little article about it, which directs the focus of this world.
