The Crimson Crusade started as an attempt by the Principality of Aurelia to subvert the government of the neighboring Principality of Pragous but became increasingly ideological. The Duke of Aurelia intervened in the contestation of the reigning Viceroy of Pragous to prop up his administration and thereby transform the Principality of Pragous into a client state. Pragon resistance to the plot was immediate, resulting in a civil war that would eventually see the Viceroy deposed. Intervention by the Solarian Republic in favor of the Royalist Faction created a religious slant to the conflict, causing many to see the war as an Amenite attack on the Volusian faith.

Prelude
Every 10 years the Viceroy of Pragous faces a period where their title can be challenged by qualified claimants. The reigning Viceroy Prixus feared that he would not be able to defeat his rivals but was unwilling to concede his power, and so entered into a conspiracy with the Duke of the neighboring island-state of Aurelia. Due to the events of the Summertime War and the Duke's shared faith in Amen, the Aurelians then reached out to the Solarian Republic for additional support. This conspiracy would come to be known as the Royalist Faction.
The Sorrow of Waking
The Royalists had believed that if they seized control of the city of Port-o-Pragous they would be able to maintain the Viceroy's position with minimal conflict. They used the Sun's Dawn Festival of the Summer Solstice as cover to smuggle Royalist Troops into the city, using the natural influx of shipping and travelers to hide their deployment with help from local collaborators. At the height of the festival the Royalists engineered a riot they then used as justification to lock down the city and arrest their rivals. Once in control of the city they declared martial law and used their control of the city to rig the Viceroy's Challenge to ensure that Viceroy Prixus stayed in power.
