Rat Town
Summary
A notorious and ramshackle shanty-town of lowlives and smugglers, Rat Town is a valuable commodity for those in search of information and black market connections.Info Brokers
The Misters of the town are infamous information brokers, who use children to gather information from every barony of the kingdom and beyond. The Misters supply these children, who are usually orphans, with food, shelter, and protection, as with their funds each one is able to buy enough thugs and knifemen to protect their organization. These Misters, and occasionally Madams, make up a shadow council of warlocks who have seceded from the reign of Dejal, and now cooperate with one another to suppress the negative effects of their pact. It is also through group efforts that they are able to maintain lucrative contracts tied to prophecies long past, only selling the details to those who show the mark of a chosen one, or those with exorbitant amounts of coin. As well, they conduct scrying rituals for a fee. This service is almost always in demand as husbands and wives use it to confirm the other’s infidelity, or for businessmen to spy on their rival’s work in order to gain the upper hand for the next fiscal quarter. It’s said the information networks of the Misters and Madams spans all the way across Surrexit, and even to the pits of the Underdark.Population
The town itself is multicultural, though it is mostly populated by Masiy who reject the supervision of the Medjay. The rest are orcs, half-ogres, hobgoblins, or ratfolk who have forsaken the plains and metropolises in order to make a life for themselves as spies, smugglers, or mercenaries. Prominent jobs are those passed down by the infamous founder of Rat Town who made his fortune through the funding of high-risk water merchants, sailors, and spice dealers. Though, many people here are homeless, and will do whatever job necessary to continue their life of drug abuse, alcoholism, or escapism of a different kind, or so that they can remain unseen by the Medjay who may have claims for their head.Raids
Every child in Rat Town knows how to fight due to the near constant raids by the Tlincalli, scorpion-men who see other races as food, and the human and orog pirates who steal supplies on its way to the mainland from the Nepthys River. As such, their patrol riders, called the Yellow Turbans, are exceptional camel and horse riders, as well as archers.
