Pharellion Golems
Two hundred years before the fall, the population of a small city on the coast about a hundred miles from Sospitator vanished. This city, called Pharellion, was inhabited by a amphibious species who were just as used to the water as they were on land. The entire species lived in this city, and were mostly left alone by the rest of the world and so when they vanished, no one thought much of it.
They didn't stay vanished for forever though. Somehow, when the rifts began opening, a few Earth golems began popping up that contained intelligent life. They had the memories and personalities of the inhabitants of Pharellion, and were now immortal.
Most of the wizards today believe that their souls were trapped in the city by powerful magic. Then when the rifts opened up, the magic went out of control and transformed the souls into these golems.
Now immortal, the Pharellion Golems live in Sospitator, a few thousand total, and while they have to avoid the sea now, they give great tips to the local fisherman. Most of the golems with any aptitude for magic are constantly looking for a way to transform back, as they have no way of reproducing or experiencing most of life in their current form. Being immortal has its perks however, and these users of the arcane have plenty of time to find a way back to their original forms.
