Monks of Harutochi

In Harutochi, high upon mountains and deep within forest, you can find warriors who seek to reach the pinnacle of their arts, and bring enlightenment to their land. The Harurite Monks are some of the most dedicated folks to martial craft, forming monasteries in secluded areas around the Isles, drawing inspiration from their surroundings as they attempt to divine the mysteries of being and Gallilir itself.
These monks also play an important spiritual role in the world, travelling the Harutochi Isles and passing on their teachings to the common folk in an attempt to grant them inner peace and entry into an ascended after life. They also perform funeral rights and mediation during conflict, being viewed largely as wise and just travelers of the world.
Each monastery operates under its own rules, the head of each group fiercely debating with rival cohorts on the finer points of being. Despite fierce debate between the many schools, there are certain core rules that are firmly held in belief by all of the monastic traditions.

Career

Qualifications

Anyone is allowed to join a monastery, but will be heavily scrutinized on arrival. Their initial trials involve sparring, the giving up of everything they own, receiving a new name and finally waiting for a monk in the monastery to take them on as a student. If there are no monks who would take a student, they must live at the entrance of the temple until someone does. If no one takes them on, they return to their life or wait until they pass on the cold stones of the monastery gate.

Career Progression

Monks begin their lives at the Monastery as initiates. They are stripped of name, title and possessions, and receive only their robes in return. From there they spend a year undergoing harsh training at the hands of a senior monk. Assisting them in their training, often holding targets for their attacks, sparring and tending their needs. Beyond just acting as a training dummy for their senior monastery members, they also undergo study of the Monastery's tenets and beliefs. After a year, if the initiate has not faltered in their training, they'll officially joint he monastery, burning their possessions of their past life and accepting this new path.

Payment & Reimbursement

In Harutochi, monks are taken care of by local villages they visit. They are not permitted to accrue wealth greater than 100 gold pieces, excess gold being donated to charity. It is understood by the monastery that travelling outside Harutochi requires the monks to bend their teachings slightly to not upset the greater world.
