Storm Chasers

Storm Chasers

One of the greatest dangers in the desert region of Nijhtrieva are the Soul Storms; manifested electrical storms and tornados filled with thousands of desperate spectral hands reaching out for a host body to ease their eternal loss and suffering. But something unexpected came from these now natural occurrences too. An energy source.
When Liopel Ulvak first discovered that they could harness power from the 4000 year old plague upon the Óssidian sands, it changed the game for both the citizens of Nijhtrieva but also how the newly formed capital city of Na'Voo would operate. Ulvak formed his own guild of 'storm chasers', a group mostly made of miscreants willing to put their lives on the line for gold and prestige. They drafted their first code of conduct shortly after, but the chasers didn't follow the by-laws for very long.
With an entire group of renegade 'sand pirates' out for coin, riding around the desert on dune vehicles, capturing souls for energy; the culture of the chasers began to shift. Soon it became personal, rivalries were formed, and chasers would do just about anything to outdo each other.
What is a Soul Storm?
Made up of the residual spectral energy from the mass deaths in the Great city of Elzibar almost 4000 years ago, this ghostly storm now devastates the landscape with the howls of 'the Choir' - "The storm of souls always screaming into the dust."
Nijhtrieva is a dangerous region, from spontaneous and erratic storms forming out of nowhere and trying to force new souls into your body, to Night Crawlers* picking off the remaining few; but the Storm Chasers thrive off the adrenaline. You might say, they are just as dangerous as the desert they thrive in.

*Night Crawlers are nightmarish creatures of a sickly inky black visage that feed off the Óssidian formations in Nijhtrieva and use shards of the substance to attack their victims. They hunt mainly at night when the sands are cool and when they cannot be seen, pulling their victims into large sandholes and vacuums to be stored overnight and eaten during the day in the safety of the underterrain. These burrowing creatures use their saliva to stiffen the sands to make tunnels, have sharpened gemstone claws to rip their prey to shreds, and most terrifying of all, they hunt in groups of 3 to 4.
