Luxling Shards

Why are Luxling Shards so popular?

Buried for millennia under the sands of Nijhtrieva roam the small and luminescent creatures known as Luxlings. An eight legged, flying insect known for sprouting brilliant glowing crystal formations from its abdomen.   When the City of Na'Voo was rediscovered, the Luxlings were incredibly useful to the explorers; not only as a natural light source within the chasm, but friendly and easy to train through high pitched whistles. The researchers quickly learnt that different diets could change the colour of the Luxling's formations, and that the formations could be painlessly removed from the creature when the reached an elderly age of 4 years.   Now, over 900 years later, Luxling shards are used in a variety of ways; from the less luminescent ones to be woven into jewellery, to the more substantial crystals being used as street lighting or even as lamps inside of homes. The shards themselves can be bought from any local store in Na'Voo (and very rarely outside of the region) and only lose their glow about a year after the Luxling it came from has passed through the veil. They were even found to be able to be ground down and turned into paints or oils using certain eccentric procedures - though experimentation with Luxlings has been deemed illegal in the last few years after their population began to decrease.   The Luxlings are now under a protection law by the Council of Mi'el, as one of the only affordable lighting sources for the underground city, they must be unharmed and even provided for, in order to build back their population numbers. Many now keep them as domesticated pets in order to guarantee a light source for their families, though a permit is needed in order to work with or train Luxlings for theatre and light shows under the misuse act of 4462.
