Wights

The Returned

Wights are a very new class of sentients to appear within the Ninth Plane, only having appeared in the realms of the living in 2591 FFE. They are the undead champions of the great necromancer Istara the Great, Queen of Faragorn, and Fourth Dark Lord. From the few reports that have filtered out among refugees and survivors, Wights are undead that possess autonomy- completely unlike the usual undead, which are mindless zombies completely controlled by their necromancer.     Wights inhabit rotting corpses, but seem to possess their own souls. Because of this, they are independent and capable of the same feats as mortals, dialed up even higher due to their great resistance to physical injury. Most are powerful spellcasters, and can even communicate telepathically, as their vocal cords have rotted away. More interesting is that no Wight has been identified as a former great sorcerer, warrior, or monarch- they seem to be mismatched, a soul inhabiting an entirely different body than they once did when they were alive.     Wights are the day-to-day overlords and overseers in Faragorn, reporting up to the Queen herself, and enforcing her will across the countryside. Almost all are necromancers, capable of raising their own undead hordes, but even those that do not seem to possess any magical power at all can command the dead, like captains of some unholy army. They are a rare sight, with about one Wight for every thousand mindless corpses.     How they came to be, how they are created, and how one can become a Wight are topics that are entirely shrouded in mystery. None, save for the Wights themselves as well as their Dark Lord, can say.
Shrouded Immortality   Though Wights are evidently immortal, and possess their own souls- thus making Wighthood a viable escape from mortality for those that are interested- their origin is unknown save to a small few. Because they have only just appeared for the first time, much about them is unknown, and will have to be unraveled as time continues.
