Immortals

The Immortals are the oldest creations of An: the first living things to come into existence, during the Second Era. They are powerfully magical, and hyper-intelligent, but also strange by modern reckoning. An did not create mortal life, ecosystems, or fleshed-out reproduction systems until the Third Era, and thus these creatures arose in a time vastly different from the later eras. They are genderless, reproduce asexually and only very rarely, and do not age and die. Because of this, they do not view nor appreciate life the same way the mortal races do, and this is their greatest weakness despite their other strengths.     Despite sharing great magical and physical strength, power, and intelligence, the forms of the Immortals are myriad. Among them are Colossi, towering titans covered in shimmering scales, Dragons, great winged serpents and reptiles capable of breathing fire, Elementals, massive collections of living elemental material, Tritons, gargantuan sea creatures able to command the currents, and Fae: slippery, formless little creatures that are nonetheless capable of great feats of magic.     The first four High Gods, often called the Immortal Four, were created to help An in the war against Oh during the Second Era. These Gods existed in a time before civilization, and thus do not represent aspects of modern life, but rather aspects of the Planes themselves. Amat the Elemental is the High God of Air, while Irbu the Dragon is the High God of Fire. Velsoth the Triton is the High God of Water, and Jord the Colossus is the High God of Earth. These Gods are the oldest and strangest within An's pantheon, and do not recognize the values of mortals, often acting in direct opposition to them. Nonetheless, they are also the most steadfast in their guard against Oh, and are fairly singleminded- they do not fight with one another, they do not bargain, they do not give their favor to mortal men. To anger one is to invite destruction.   The High Gods are not the only remaining Immortals, however. A few survived the destruction of the first three planes, and have roosted in the Ninth. Almost none have directly survived since the Second Era, with most having been born in the Third or Fourth Era, or even in the Fifth- on average, an Immortal produces offspring once per millenia. Some are fairly well known, like the Dragon Kalath, who rules as eternal High King of the Dwarven Kingdom of Andun. Most, however, shun attention and contact from mortals, and live solitary lives deep in the wilds.
Most Immortals are far removed from mortal civilization, but those that do interact with the younger creations of An often partially adopt their cultures, so that communication is easier. For example, despite being technically genderless, the Dragon Kalath is identified as a male, and thus styled as King. With that said, all of the Immortals are strange by modern reckoning, with even the most accustomed Immortals still possessing views that to mortals seem odd or nonsensical.
