Stonehill Abbey

The Seat of all Religion in County Stonehill

Stonehill Abbey

Stonehill Abbey is the seat of all religious beliefs in County Stonehill. Since Ludo does not have one major religion or belief system, each county Abbey in charge of ensuring the peace between religions - with Stonehill acting as the head of all the counties.   Stonehill Abbey is also home to the Reverend Abbot Modesto Anoz, who is the head of all Ludovian churches.    He works closely alongside the king, the lords of Ludo, and the many visiting dignitaries. It is his job to review and send any outgoing official communications from the king or Stonehill Castle.    As such, Stonehill Abbey also works as a preliminary hub between non-urgent messages to the castle, royal family, the King's Guard, or the king directly.    While all scrolls or messages from the king do not to be sent from Stonehill Abbey or approved by the reverend abbot, they usually are as a matter of courtesy - unless it is an emergency or personal situation.    However, any official messages that come from Stonehill Castle and not from the king directly (ie the death of a king and the coronation of another king), must be sent from Stonehill Abbey, approved, and stamped by the reverend abbot with both his official seal and the official seal of the abbey.    Stonehill Abbey is also home to a mix of hundreds of brothers, fathers, and abbots. It is duty bound to accent all visitors and give them a safe place to stay while they are traveling.

The History of Stonehill Abbey

Stonehill Abbey was commissioned by King Ahmenebar soon after he began construction on Stonehill Castle.    It is one of the oldest abbey's in Ludo, apart from several abbeys in the north that are still standing.    While Ahmenebar was hesitant at first to commission the building of the abbey, he realized that a similar structure would be needed as he continued to change the way of life in Ludo.    It is not known why he demanded slate be brought from the north for the abbey, as slate from the north isn't present in Stonehill Castle, but he had it shipped at great cost.     The first church in County Stonehill was on the same plot of land as where the abbey was built, once the abbey was finished, the church was remodeled and expanded to become the home of the brothers, fathers, abbots, visiting scholars, and any students.    Though originally the place where all brothers began their studies in order to qualify as a father, it is no longer so. Having long moved to several abbeys in the midlands.   However, any abbott wishing to further his career and become a reverend abbot must study at least 2 years at Stonehill.

Stonehill Abbey & King Ahmenebar

While Ahmenebar was against the abbey at the first, late in his life he found the building to be a source of comfort. Enjoying the acoustics of the high ceilings.    As such, he ordered for a separate landing to be created where he could sit and watch high up from the altar and choir and listen to the sermons and any music.    Since Ahmenebar was the abbey's first patron much of its look and decorations were chosen by him. As renovations have continued throughout the years, much care has been put to keep the same spirit and look to the interior of the chapel portion of the abbey.
