Legio IV Scythica

Legio IV Scythica is the mortal legion currently based in Viminacium. It is assigned by Rome to protect Moesia against invading hostile tribes from across the Danube river, and also to takes some parts in civilian tasks, such as the building and keeping of roads.

Structure

The legion's legatus legionis is proconsul Licinius Crassus (grandson of the First Triumvirate's Licinius Crassus).

History

Legio IV was founded by Marcus Antonius in 42 BCE. The legion's first experience in combat was against Scythian tribes, while it was located in the Greek city of Pontic Olbia, hence earning itself the name Scythica. In 36 BCE, IV Scythica was one of 16 legions who took part in Antonius' failed campaign against the Parthian Empire.

In 30 BCE, following Antonius' death from the previous year, IV Scythica was transferred by Octavius to the Danube province of Moesia Superior, and stationed in Viminacium.
