The Protectorate

The Protectorate is a joint Human/Anansi/Synthetic organization dedicated to the safety of all sentients friendly to Nordic Frog Beach. Centered in New Alexandria, the Protectorate is responsible for training, equipping, and organizing a large force of "Protectors". A Protector watches over their community, and is armed with access to resources to serve the needs of its members. Protectors are trained in psychological evaluation, grief counseling, financial planning, and self-defense. They are well-trusted in their communities. Despite their humble aims, the Protectorate has not fully escaped martial conflict. It cooperates with the X-Templar in matters relating to the Imperials and the Exiles. Both organizations regularly present threats to Protectorate citizens, and some action must be taken in defense of the innocent.

Structure

The Protectorate is organized in an administrative sense by Ischyro. She collates data, calculates probabilities, analyzes psych profiles, and creates models. Then, she passes her information down to the Doyens. The human leaders of the Protectorate are a group of twelve Doyens. Anyone can apply to be a Doyen, and they are elected by a vote of the Protectors, although it requires a two-thirds "no" vote to deny a person's entry as a Doyen. The Doyens perform all of the interpersonal work. They give assignments, lead meetings, perform speeches, console grieving families, and more. Other Protectors answer to the Doyens during discipline cases and training. Below the Doyens, all Protectors are equal. They all have access to the same resources, there are no titles (other than "Protector") and they all rotate between a variety of practical roles.

Culture

Protectors are, first and foremost, members of their community. Their work never takes up their whole life, and they live and work in the same areas. Protectors typically have an "inside" vs. "outside" perspective. The human and Anansi residents of worlds friendly to Nordic Frog Beach are "inside". Those people are to be defended. Whatever their needs, a Protector's job is to discover and fulfill those needs. Those from other worlds and other populations are "outside". A Protector's job is to determine whether those populations are a threat, and if they are, defend Froggers from them. The Protectors are not just fighters. They are detectives, builders, counselors, midwives, teachers, and more. Anyone can become a Protector if they have the mindset to serve their community instead of themselves. Since war is mostly unheard of on Nordic Frog Beach, most Protectors are engaged in forms of public service other than defending against physical threats.

The Protectorate aims to ensure there is no martial conflict between or against the sentients of Nordic Frog Beach.

Infrastructure

The Protectors' Tower is the center of the Protectorate. It lies in New Alexandria, and is a central landmark of that city. As the organization's headquarters, the Tower is where Protectors go for assignments, training, socialization with their coworkers, and for office work. The Tower is a massive independent structure. Its lower levels are filled with meeting and conference rooms for meetings between Protectors or between Protectors and the citizens. It has basements equipped with the infrastructure to create both machinery and replacement bodies as needed. Its upper levels have training rooms, offices, labs, and other facilities intended for Protectors only. Its uppermost levels serve as both a watchtower and an astronomical observatory. The Protectors maintain small outposts on Tandoori and on Spideyworld, as well as on the Rainbow Gate island on Nordic Frog Beach. Outposts typically are equipped with power generation, nanofabrication, safe lodging for small numbers of Protectors, and security to keep away unwanted guests.
