The Gentry of the Corner

There is no real history of uniform rule in The Corner. Everything is Feudal and kinda shifty. The countryside is just a patchwork of fiefs of various sizes which are united together with alliances of varying permanence and solidity. There are some general groupings on a more macro level that balance each other out though, for the most part. There aren't official titling norms or designations, it really just tends on the power level of the family or individual involved. Nobles tend to name/title themselves. If they give themselves too lofty a title which they cannot support they may get targeted by those above them looking for an easy win. If they title themselves too low however they will be mocked and lose influence as a result. Usually in order to claim the rank above what they have currently, a noble family would have fealty or allegiance of some sort from 3-7 of their peers. A smaller number are required for more direct vassalage, while more might be required if the bonds between them are weaker, or less formalized. Knights are the lowest rung of this grouping: they are the unlanded relatives of those with titles, who can all be called Lords. Once they are installed in a keep/fort/town with at least 1 village associated they become Lords themselves. These tend to be the real small fry of this world. Mayors might name themselves to be knights if they are confident in their own martial abilities. Doing so without just invites a duel from some Knight who is only lacking property of his own in order to join the proper ranks of the gentry.

History

There has never been any sort of consistent union in this collection of nobility. They all ally and betray each other in a very loose association, however the closest thing there is to unity is the unspoken agreement that nobody will rule them all, anybody who grows to strong will immediately be set upon by the rest.
