Starships under the Cruiser classification are the general workhorses of most fleets in the galaxy. They typically form the backbone of any main fleet and can operate in deep space independently or as the flagship of a scout fleet. They are heavily armed and armoured without sacrificing operating times and can be customized for a vast array of specialist tasks. Cruiser-class ships are generally divided into three types of functionality: Line Cruisers, Battlecruisers, and Specialty Cruisers. Line Cruisers: Also referred to as "Ships-o-the-Line" or Fleet Cruisers, Line Cruisers are the most commonly found and used type of cruisers in most space faring species fleets. They are typically equipped to be semi-self-sustaining, being equipped with crew quarters; medical bays; limited hangers for shuttlecraft; galley and mess facilities, waste reclamation and recycling facilities; and basic astrometrics. Some Line Cruisers are outfitted with facilities for hydroponics, munition production, and/or fuel processing, though this is generally reserved for ships that are not serving in a main fleet, such as the flagship of a long range patrol fleet or for solitary exploration craft. A Line Cruiser's armaments typically consist of between two to three anti-ship capable weapons and a minimal amount of lighter weaponry for limited point defense. (Eg. Constitution Class Starships like USS Enterprise from Star Trek.) Battlecruisers: Battlecruisers are the largest non-Capital sized ships in any navy. They are fully dedicated to void warfare, being equipped with multiple weapon systems, heavy armour, and stripped of all non-combat oriented systems and facilities. They typically take on the flagship role for a combat fleet if there are no Capital-Class ships in the fleet. Battlecruisers are usually equipped with one heavy-duty anti-ship weapon system capable of causing severe damage to Capital-Class ships and even breaking through orbital and planetary defenses given enough time. They are also equipped with another two or three lesser anti-ship weapons and a minimal amount of point defense weaponry to engage smaller craft capable of dodging the main weapon battery. (Eg. The Battlecruisers from Starcraft) Specialty Cruisers: Also referred to as Exotic Cruisers, Specialty Cruisers are the rarest type of cruiser found in the galaxy. Their rarity is due to their incredibly niche combat roles or unique technology that can't be widely utilized by fleet formations. Specialty Cruisers have been used throughout history to swing the tides of battles or even entire wars thanks to the unpredictability they can bring to both the tactical and strategic theaters of a conflict.
