Serpent People

Once, the Serpent People were the supreme rulers of Earth, and they stubbornly refuse to allow anyone to forget it. However, the modern scions of that once-mighty race have fallen far indeed, a long and steady descent into savagery and madness.   Most Serpent People in Sub-Terra are little more than animals; sinuous, scaled humanoids with snake-like heads and long tails. They wear crude, ragged clothing (if any) and attack non-Serpent People on sight, using their clawed hands or poisonous fangs. They instinctively obey the commands of civilized Serpent People, but aren’t smart enough to carry out orders more complex than attacking, guarding, fetching, or carrying.   A few rare Serpent People retain a measure of civilized intellect. They look much like their savage cousins, but a cold reptilian intelligence gleams in their dead, golden eyes. Civilized Serpent People are either remnants of their ancient civilization, kept in stasis for uncounted millennia, or the occasional genetic throwback born with both cruel intelligence and racial memories of their ancient ways.   Savage Serpent People instinctively defer to and obey them, allowing the sometimes weaker civilized minority to survive and thrive among them. Civilized Serpent People typically dress in long, hooded robes with wide sleeves, but they’re magically able to assume other humanoid forms at will, allowing them to move about undetected. Many civilized Serpent People are also sorcerers of some skill.
