The Legend of the Elder Trees

When the first people to explore the Flats of Caerum arrived in the region, the mighty Elder Tree with its ghost white bark and fire orange leaves dominated their view. The bark of the Elder Tree has served many purposes since its discovery. From being used as fuel and weapons for the great armies during the Rebellion to being used by the finest craftsmen in Caerum Ba to make the most elegant furniture for the noblest of people. The leaves of the Elder Trees were used by the sorcerers of Balog Mal to create deadly poisons and firebombs that nearly put an end to the Fractured Lands as a whole.
The legend of the creation of the Elder Trees is prominent throughout the Fractured Lands, even though the trees only exist in one small region. Legend says that when the Council of Four sat upon their mighty thrones high above the sky, they looked at the greens and greys, blues and browns, all the colors that dotted the surface below them and said to one another “truly, it is incomplete.”
Baelzeph the Lord of Fire looked to the mighty Shaetan lake and demanded “fire spring forth,” and so it did. Explosions of lava burst from the lake, but when ash rained down and turned the ground black, the Council was displeased again saying “truly, it is incomplete.”
He then looked to the might of the Balik’da, now called Witchstone and commanded: “fire spring forth.” And so the fire did. With a howl of agony, fire burst from the Dark Caverns and covered the mountains. The trees burnt, the mountains quaked, but in time the fire subsided and creation returned to normal.
It wasn’t until he set his sight on the mighty Flats of Caerum that he knew what he was missing. “Lady Saljen, the grass below is green and the water around is blue, but at which part of this dominion do I hold to? Surely, my lady, you can spare a tree or two.”
Lady Saljen looked upon him with pity, the Lord of Fire had no domain, nothing of his own. “Lord Baelzeph, you have nowhere to call your own, and for that, I do grant you the lands of the Caerum. But I urge you, do not call fire forth, do not destroy, build up and bring life.”
Life. What a strange concept for Lord Baelzeph. He has never brought up life, but he knew that Lady Saljen’s offer was too good to refuse.
Baelzeph stepped down from his throne of fire and stepped into the world he helped craft. The air was cool and sweet, the mountains before him rose like giants in the distance, and the trees – the trees were magnificent. The mighty trees of the Flats of Caerum were what captivated Baelzeph. As night began to fall, Baelzeph laid down in the middle of the Flats and closed his eyes. This is where I will make my mark, he thought.
When he awoke, the bark had become like stark white and the leaves like a burning fire. The birds in the trees were singing the most beautiful song and their wings had become blood red.
