The Last of the Giants

O, I am the last of the giants,     My people are gone from the earth.     The last of the great mountain giants,     Who ruled all the world at my birth.           Oh the smallfolk have stolen my forests,     they’ve stolen my rivers and hills.     They've built their deep mines through my valleys,     And fished all the fish from my rills.           In stone halls they burn their great fires,     in stone halls they forge their sharp spears.     Whilst I walk alone in the mountains,     With no true companion but tears.         They hunt me with dogs in the daylight,     They hunt me with torches by night.     For these men who are small can never stand tall,     Whilst giants still walk in the light.         O, I am the last of the giants,     So learn well the words of my song.     For when I am gone the singing will fade,     And the silence shall last long and long.

The Last of the Giants is a mournful song, written by the frost giant skald Gurgann the Wise in 2749 JR. Although hyperbolic, as giants were somewhat still abundant during Gurgann's lifetime, many giants still consider it to be deeply tragic ballad; it reminds them how very little of their original kingdom of Ostaria has survived the throes of time, especially in the wake of humans arriving in the North and carving out civilisations for themselves.   As Gurgann was one of the most respected skalds during the third age, the song quickly spread throughout the giants of the North, and by the time of his death in 2848 JR, the song's lyrics were common knowledge to most giants (with the exception of the stone giants, who generally aim to be as isolated and set aside from the rest of giant culture as is physically possible). The song may also sometimes be sung by 'smallfolk' bards and minstrels, particularly those who've encountered giants on their adventurers.
