The Citadel

Purpose / Function

The main military hub of The Heartlands, it is the center of organised military. It organizes, trains and houses all soldiers or guards of the Kingdom. It also serves as the main prison of the area, although the prison wing is small, as all who are housed in it are summarily executed within the week. It contains a manor in which the High Constable - marshal of all operations within the citadel - resides.

Alterations

This was a structure of the Previous Era known as the "Castle of Good Hope". (Some historians would argue it should be considered a structure from an even older era, as are many structures that are resided in today. These ancient structures aren't cursed, as they were not affected by the sins of the previous era that forced the Divine Entity to purify the world.)   The changes to structure during this era have mostly been minor - repairs, and reconstructing the moat, for instance - however two constructions are of note. The walls were modified after a few decades of occupation to have proper defensive crenelations and machicolations, useful to protect the archers that guard the walls. There was also a more recent development. The sally port of the Citadel was blocked off to most - it was connected to a room in the manor of the High Constable, supposedly so that he could have quickest access to escape.

Architecture

This structure is a star fort. It forms a pentagon of thick walls with bastions at each corner. The base of the walls are stone, however at a certain height the stonework changes to brick.

History

As the Kingdom began to expand, it needed a central base from which to recruit and train soldiers to act as guards for the various incorporated settlements and from which to manage this increased amount of government agents. The Citadel was chosen for its centralised location and preexisting fortifications.
