The Library of Eternity

I had been training my entire life for this, as I stood before the countless layers of alchemic symbols and arcane strictures I had painstakingly drawn into the soft earthen floor of my house. “If this works out properly, I could potentially change the shape of our world forever” I whispered to myself in an attempt to calm my nerves. Now, for the final touches. I pulled out my spellbook, old and rugged, it was a parting gift from my father before the Twins bore him away.   With a clear and confident voice, I began to read out the somatic elements of my incantation. The runes in the circle at my feet slowly blazed to life, their hellish light filling my basement with crimson shadows. As I spoke the last line of my formula, I felt my world shudder.   My incantation had worked, at least in part. The circle I stood before crumbled away, revealing a swirling vortex of flame, the heat of it held back by the warding runes I had placed along its sides. I swallowed heavily, and then, jumped.   I don’t remember much from the fall, just a brief moment of searing pain before blackness. When I awoke I found myself standing in what appeared to be the foyer of the most elaborate library I had ever seen. The floors were made of carved obsidian and stretching out for as far as I could see in all directions were bookcases.   Clearly something was wrong, that portal was supposed to take me to the domain of Atlus, lord of the underworld so I could attempt to barter with him for the soul of my beloved father, but this, this does not match any description of his domain I had ever read in any ancient text.   As I walked the halls of this impossible library, I began to look at the titles of the books, and much to my surprise, I found them to be names. Alistair Aracombry, Alistair Aradocromby, Alistair Alistair Araecromby, etcetera, with many books repeating titles.   Out of idle curiosity, I decided to pull out one of these books and flip through its pages, and what I found baffled me. It was a first-person account of every event in this mans life down to the very detail, no matter how many pages I turned there seemed to be just as many left in the book as before, when I tried flipping ahead, the number of pages I skipped forward I found myself reading of events decades later. Suddenly the scholar within me was intrigued, I rushed through this labyrinth of books thinking only of my own name. The library seemingly heard my call and soon I found MY book. With trembling hands, I opened its pages and quickly turned to the last few pages. And as I read the final lines, my blood turned to ice.   And as I, Abbygale Horizon, read the last pages of the book of my existence, I realized that I now possess knowledge no mortal has any right to know. And now for the rest of my life, I shall remain locked within the endless library of Eternity.
