Family names in Enther

Family names in Enther are the portion of one's personal name that indicates one's family, settlement or community. Origins of family names are varied and are generally determined by ones social and economic status.    The most illustrious family names in Enther tend to fall into five categories.  
  • Old Kingdom Names: These names can be traced back to the Old Kingdoms of Enther, back before the enslavement in the Age of Dread. These family names are uncommon and carry a lot of prestige due to their lineage. Examples of these would be Breakspear, Hargreave. Fairmaine and Wyvernkin. These tend to be carried only by the lords of Enther, and many of them have debatable legitimacy. 
  • Mathean Names: These names are taken from the early ages of the First Age of Men. As most humans had been left nameless over the millennia of enslavement, their names had been lost overtime. Once they were liberated, many of these people gave their offspring family names. The most famous is that of the Hero himself, King Matheus, who's descendents were named Matheuson. Other examples of this naming would be Hackonson, Valkireson and Rivettson. 
  • Lighten Names: These names can usually find their lineage back to the Second Age, also known as the light age. These names tend to be taken from other kingdoms discovered during this time, those who made Enther their home and rose to prominence. Examples of these would be Vaus and Bosvell .
More common family names such as Riverwood, Elvett and Clearwater are usually names that have purely established overtime. These names other family names tend to be taken by other nobles or those of a better social ilk than other commoners, but are not restricted. Some commoners like only have their name to link their family back to a time of prosperity.    The final name is that of the settlements. This is commonly used for all commoners throughout Enther. They are identified by their given name followed by their settlement. Examples being "Pol of Karp Town" or "Gilly of Pockleton". For this reason, communities try to avoid repeating the same name as someone in their community should it cause confusion. Many cases of mistaken identity has taken root because of a name being common amongst a community.
