Plane of Light

The Immaculate Fields

The most prominent aspect one will notice when entering this plane, regardless of where they enter, is the shining central tower of seemingly infinite height that looms over it. The tower is said to be the seat of The Observer on High, from which it watches reality, and this may be part of the Elemental Lord's namesake. Around it is a shining, placid field, with structures and even life of seeming crystal or glass adding to its splendor.

Traits

  • Gravity: In contrast to most other planes, down is almost always simply downwards in the Immaculate Fields.
  • Blinding Beauty: Those who initially enter the plane must immediately succeed on a check of PhR or MR 160 or succumb to blindness that lasts a number of turns equal to a tenth of the degree of failure. On a failure of more than 100, the loss is permanent (though it can still be healed supernaturally). After this initial overwhelming, however, visitors often find they can see with impressive clarity.
  • Magic: Spells of the Path of Light (including subpaths or free access spells a caster uses with it) take effect at one level higher than they are cast at, while spells on the Path of Darkness suffer the opposite effect.
  • Psionics: Psychic powers from the Discipline of Sentience gain a +20 to Potential when used in regard to positive emotion, and -20 to Potential in regard to negative emotion. Powers from the Discipline of Light gain a +40 to Potential.

Geography

Despite immediate appearances, the Plane of Light's infinite reaches are far from uniform. Some areas include rainbow fields, others towering crystalline structures, and still others rivers and lakes of Light. Biomes to some degree mirror those in The Eye in many places, while having a completely alien beauty of their own in others. At the same time, it is a landscape that seems forbidden from having flaws, and much of it is more durable and immutable than it looks. Other parts regenerate over time, re-forming themselves by solidifying the plane's boundless radiance.   Picturesque sand dunes, glassy mountains, and ravines that look more like the inside of geodes break up the plains, as do occasional forests of vibrantly colored trees. The skies hold placid clouds and rainbows, along with occasional floating islands, frequently seeming to be suspended by beams of energy from beneath them and occasionally bridged by rainbows themselves. These are common sites for elemental settlements overlooking the Immaculate Fields, and the beams that keep them aloft seem to erupt from geysers on the surface. Other settlements are built around the luminescent rivers and waterfalls, which are used for anything from agriculture to solidifying into building material in otherworldly cold forges.

Fauna & Flora

The Plane of Darkness embodies the harsh brutality of the natural world in its wildlife, and its counterpart is very much the opposite. 'Animals' of the plane are playful, peaceful, and often have shimmering furs and crystalline horns. Birds seem to be a particular favorite of The Observer, regardless of color, though most species are herbivorous or feast upon endemic elemental matter, only attacking if provoked. At the same time, the acute sensory abilities and sometimes even precognitive nature of the plane's denizens mean these behaviors pose little danger for them.   Sentient species tend to be humanoid, or at least bear some outward humanoid features, though many scholars suspect this is a product of shapeshifting or visual illusion rather than natural forms. Adding to this theory is the fact that the known outliers are extreme, with more glassy wings than form or being made up of little more than vague glowing light or shining geometric shapes. Flight is not universal among them, and some dwell in the plains, guarding and shepherding them. 'Sentient' may be a difficult category to discern, however, as many of the so-called animals are intelligent enough for basic speech.   Beings of Light are universally beautiful in some way and outwardly positive, but not all of them are necessarily well-meaning. Some of these guardians may seek to annihilate those who bring ugliness into their world or cause even superficial harm to it. In some exceptional cases, this may include the mere fact that their targets are mortal and thus imperfect themselves. Other natives may seduce outsiders to stay, ablating their negative emotions and ultimately leaving nothing but empty shells of pleasure as their souls are claimed by the realm.

Natural Resources

While gathering them is high sacrilege in Imperial Arrboth, it is undeniable that the furs, feathers, and horns of its residents are of outstanding quality, regardless of their supernatural properties. Plants are highly prized, though they tend to wilt outside of the plane unless provided continuously with light. Some of the most potent resources from the realm, however, are the elemental weapons produced in its cold forges from the 'water'ways of the plane. Learning to work these can result in otherworldly equipment that is inherently capable of interacting with energy, and that can reach outstanding quality beyond any mundane metal. Other alchemical or occult ingredients are left up to GM discretion.
