Long

Abilities
  • Frightful Presence - Thanks to their impressive size and skills, the long may choose to make a creature or group of creature frightened if they fail a enlightenment check of 17. If failed, the creature becomes frightened while in the long's presence. This check can be rerolled every turn. If the creature succeeds, they become immune to Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.
  • Highly Acclaimed - Long are widely known and well-respected across the ONEIRONASPECT. They gain advantage on allure-based skill checks.
  • Natural Glider - Thanks to their long, flexible, winding bodies, long have the ability to glide from place to place.

Attacks
  • Breath Weapon: Electrical - The long shoots a stream of electricity from their mouth, dealing 5d6 shocking damage. If the target is wearing metal armor, or is holding a metal weapon, they take an additional 1d6 shocking damage. This deals critical damage to water-based species and wet creatures unless they make a reflex (dexterity) saving throw of 15. If they succeed, they take regular damage. If they fail, they are also paralyzed for the turn. This attack can be combo'd with breath weapon: water. Once this attack is used, they must wait 5 turns to recharge.
  • Breath Weapon: Water - The long shoots a stream of pressurized water from their mouth, dealing 5d6 bludgeoning damage. This stream extinguishes non-magical fires and deals critical damage to fire-based species unless they make a reflex (dexterity) saving throw of 15. If they succeed, they take regular damage. Creatures size medium or smaller are knocked back by the stream. This attack can be combo'd with breath weapon: electrical. Once this attack is used, they must recharge by sucking up water.
  • Constrict - The long wraps around their enemy and squeezes as hard as possible, dealing 2d8 bludgeoning damage, plus their might (strength) modifier. This grapples their target. Each turn, the target may make a might (strength) save of 10 or higher to escape. For every extra move the target remains grappled, they take an additional 2d4 bludgeoning damage plus the long's might (strength) modifier.
  • Bite - The long bites their enemy, dealing 1d6 piercing damage plus their might (strength) modifier.
  • Claw - The long claws their enemy, dealing 1d4 slashing damage plus their might (strength) modifier.
  • Tail Whip - The long sweeps out with their tail, dealing 2d8 bludgeoning damage plus their might (strength) bonus, and knocking their target prone unless they make a reflex (dexterity) saving throw of 13 or better.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Head: Long heads are wide and long, being describes as "dog-like" in appearance. The forehead of the skull has two antler attachment-points, called pedicle, leading to two antlers, similar to those of the roe deer. These antlers are found in both sexes. While the antlers are growing, they are covered in a fuzzy, highly-vascular skin called velvet, which supplies oxygen and nutrients to the bone. One the antler has reached maturity, the velvet dies, and is then scratched/rubbed off by the long. These antlers serve to aid the long in sparring, establishing social hierarchy, and interestingly, as a parabolic reflector- meaning it aids in increasing hearing. The larger the antlers, the better. Once every twenty years, once a long has mated, they shed their antlers and regrow a new set.
Long possess two 'whiskers', which are long, pliable, fleshy appendages found on the upper lip of the long, near the nose. These appendages are sensory organs, loaded with nerve endings and special olfactory sensors used for detecting chemicals in the air.
The eyes of long are incredibly strong. There are two eyelids, and additionally, there is a third, protective, clear membrane covering the eye. The pupils are rounded, though unlike some lesser reptiles, the eye possesses ciliary muscles which serve to change the shape of the eye. Irises tend to be red, blue, green, or golden in coloration.
Both sexes have a 'mane', which serves to insulate the body and underside of the head. Longer manes are also viewed as attractive when looking for mates.

Limbs: Long are quadrupeds, having two legs, and two arms, both of which they walk on. The arms, however, are prehensile (grasping), and can be used while sitting still. The backs of the arms and legs are covered in tufts of thick, insulating hair, thought the fronts are scaled.

Body: The bodies of long are long and muscular, packed with flexible, moving ribs which aid them in flight- or rather gliding. When long glide, they flatten their ribs and twist their body in an S-figure, with their head up and their tail down, which captures more lift and creates a wake which raises the back part of their body.
The body is covered in differently sized scales, as well as a long strip of hair, the mane, which continues down the spine all the way to the tailtip, and helps to keep the long warm in flight as well as hiding a row of spines which protect their back.

Tail: While the entire body of the long is serpentine, the tail begins at the end of the pelvis, with the back legs. This tail is a 3rd of the length of the body, and like the body, has a long strip of hair which continues to the end of the tail, ending in a 'whip'. There are also protective spines hidden underneath this strip of hair.

Hair: As long as coldblooded, they rely on hair, sunlight, and thermals to retain heat while in the air. This hair, while not found on all of the body, cover the areas which are the most exposed: The head and neck, over the spine, and the back of the arms and legs.

Scales: The bodies of long are covered in scales, which can range from thin to thick, and shiny to rough. Long need to periodically 'shed' (ecdysis) the outer layer to make room for stronger scales.
There are two different forms of scales. Small, protective scales cover the top and sides of the body. The underbelly is covered in longer, mobile, soft scales known as 'scutes'.
There is a singular vent at the end of their tail, which serves as a excretory opening, and leads into a cloaca.

Genetics and Reproduction

Reproduction: Long reproduce sexually, and typically only lay one leg at a time.

Growth Rate & Stages

Age: Long typically live from several hundred to thousands of years. The oldest recorded age is seven thousand, five hundred and sixty-two.

Ecology and Habitats

Temperature: While long are cold blooded, they live in areas which stay around 60 degrees Fahrenheit, and their hair helps to retain heat.

Habitat: Long prefer mountainous areas, as the heights make gliding rather easy, with nearby water sources.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Diet: Long are omnivorous, though their diet consists mostly of meat. Large, vegetable and fruit rich meals are considered a luxury, and tend to be saved for special occasions.

Habits: Long hunt once a week, prepare their meals, and then spend the rest of the week resting, or entertaining themselves with art or literature. During this feeding period, they eat around 250,000 calories.
