Basic Information

Anatomy

Chest: Female centaurs have two breasts on the upper torso, and two teats on the lower torso, between the hind legs. While centaurs only tend to have one to two children at a time, sometimes a nursing female will breastfeed the children of other mothers. Young centaur will suckle from either set.

Fur: The lower torsos of centaurs are covered in a short, gleaming coat. At a distance, the fur is so short it appears to simply be a differently colored skin, though it is in fact a strong, rich coat. These coats serve to protect centaurs from harsh elements and cold temperatures in cold climates, when the fur becomes thicker.
Coats come in a variety of colors and patterns, varying with race. This can range from bay, black, brown, chestnut, sorrel, palomino, buckskin, dun, cream, gray, dapple gray, grullo, blue roan, red roan, appaloosa, paint, pinto, tabiano, overo, white, and more.

Hair: Centaur hair is well known for it's strength and length. Hair (not to be confused with the fur of a centaur, which coats the lower torso and legs) grows on the heads, faces, and tail. Most commonly, hair is black, brown, or blonde, but can be a variety of other colors depending on the centaur's race.

Limbs: Centaurs are quadrupedal, having four unguligrade legs which they walk on, and two muscular arms, ending in prehensile (grasping), five digited hands. Their legs end in odd-toed (one toed) hooves, which must be trimmed and cleaned regularly to remain in good health.
The hooves of centaurs are made up of the nail, the frog, and the coffin bone. The nail is the hard, outer covering of a hoof, while the frog refers to the soft, flexible underside. The coffin bone refers to the bone on the inside of the hoof.

Tail: The tails of centaurs are comprised of two parts; the dock and the skirt. The dock is the muscle and skin at the base of the tail, which has fur, but little hair. The skirt refers to the long, thick hairs which grow below the dock. Centaur tails are used primarily for swatting insects and communication. Raised tails often mean that the centaur is feeling high-spirited, while a tightly tucked tail may indicated discomfort. Aside from this, centaurs also raise their tails high as the run, and may swish their tails to indicate frustration, or as a precursor to a kick.

Torsos: While centaurs technically only have one torso, they possess two rib cages. The upper torso makes up the head, shoulders, and arms, while the lower torso makes up the forelegs, hindlegs, genitalia, and holds a majority of the organs.

Genetics and Reproduction

Reproduction: Centaurs reproduce sexually, and typically only have one to two children in a lifetime.

Gestation Period: The gestation period of centaurs typically range from three-hundred sixty-five days to four-hundred and twenty-five days.

Growth Rate & Stages

Age: Centaurs tend to live around seventy-eight years. The oldest recorded age is ninety-eight.

Ecology and Habitats

Temperature: Centaurs are a particularly hardy species, which can stand temperatures between 33 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on their race.

Habitat: Centaurs do well in large, flat areas, as these make for excellent farmland and community areas, though they have also been known to enjoy deserts, forests, and more urban areas.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Diet: Centaurs are herbivorous, typically eating vegetables and fruit, as well as mushrooms on occasion.

Habits: Centaurs typically have 3-5 meals a day, eating large portion sizes. On average, they consume about 23 pounds of food a day.
