The Starless Mire
There is no sky in the Starless Mire. This vast tract of swamp earned its name because of the dense vine and branch canopy that covers it for hundreds of miles on end - creating a ceiling that hides the night.
Daytime sees shafts of light spearing through the canopy here and there, giving the whole Mire dim light conditions. At night it is near pitch darkness, save for few phosphorescent lichen, fungus, and carnivorous plants that shed feeble light on the nameless evils that slither forth.
The Starless Mire wasn't always home to evil. In long ago days, it was dominated by vibrancy and life. Natural diversity and connection to the Plane of Faerie made it a land where nature ran rampant, safe from the domination of civilized races. Those attuned with the ebb and flow of life - druids and witches - prospered there.
Over time these same qualities made the swamp a desirable place for evil to plant its seeds. Those that sought to avoid sun or scrutiny slunk into the swamp's depths. The Mire's closeness to Faerie made it a natural place for hags to congregate, safe among the evil creatures that settled there. When Sabal the Black chose it for her domain following the War of the Dragons, the pall of darkness fell heavily upon the whole Mire for good.
