Empyrean
After writing my book describing our wonderful home, I thought I might spend some extra
time in the library and do some research on the lands to the south of us. Some of what I
explored before including the kind of no man’s lands between the Greenwold and the
Empyrean, so it seems like a natural choice for a second book. I fear that this one is shorter
and less detailed than the last due to the inability to go there. What I write here is a collection of
research I have done over the past year, bits of facts from reports, bits of myth from old
legends, and some good old conjecture. So take it as it is, the best we can do without the ability
to explore ourselves. Now, enjoy my second work.
To the South of our dear Greenwold lies a terrible land, the land of the Empyrean. It is
shut off by three forts along our border that keeps the monsters from crossing into the
Greenwold. Not a lot is known of this land as it has been shut off by its ruler for ages. Most of
what is in these pages is unverified, but I have decided to write it down in the spirit of being
thorough.
One of the earliest stories of the Greenwold involves our first Queen after the Dragon
War. Queen Margaret united the Greenwold under her banner after the war ended and turned
the region into a prosperous one that lasts still today, but in those early times the Greenwold
was constantly attacked by floods of gnolls. Eventually Queen Margaret was able to build up an
army and went off on a crusade into the Empyrean to stop these attacks. She was successful
as the gnoll raids slowed to but a trickle, and the people were able to build the forts that still
guard us, but the Great Queen was never to be seen again. She and her knights died in their
crusade even as they succeeded. A sad tale that illustrates the duty and burden that rulers
should bear for their people.
The Empyrean is ruled over by a god on earth, the Empyrean. She is said to shower her
Followers with riches and luxuries, while brutally punishing all who defy her. This iron grip on
her realm has persisted as far as anyone can remember.
Due to this absolute control and isolationist stance of the Empyrean, not much current
information is known, but records from older skirmishes have been made available to me and I
have gleaned some information from them.
