Blackrift
The northern kingdom of Blackrift exists beyond the Dark Mountains, far north of Stonefast. Not technically part of the Greenwold, nevertheless, this warrior nation has long been a scourge on the more southern lands.
Located in a vast coastal valley surrounded by dense pine forest, Blackrift is a uniquely verdant and habitable land in the cold tundra of the far north. Due to the geography of the valley and warm ocean currents, Blackrift is sheltered from the worst weather - allowing their society of humans, half-orcs, dragonborn, and hobgoblins to thrive.
The citizens of Blackrift are fearsome warriors and able seamen. The abundance of timber and access to the sea means that Blackrift commands the large armada of ships. Fishing, whaling, and seal-hunting is a common profession, while land animals are hunted more for fur than food.
A rigid, feudal society built around a warrior culture, all adults in Blackrift are expected to fight when called. Warriors top the social hierarchy, and strength is idealized as the chief virtue. At their top is the High King, who commands his khans and jarls with an iron fist, embodying the ideology that, “The best things are not freely given - they must be taken.”
Several hundred years ago, the Blackrift armada sailed on the Greenwold in a successful campaign of conquest. For a decade, Blackrift ruled nearly all the Greenwold - until an alliance of good kingdoms was able to beat back the Blackrift tide. The invaders were driven back to their homeland in the harsh north, where they still brood on their loss.

Recent Developments:
The current High King, Wulfkirk, awaits the day when his warriors can reclaim the Greenwold. He has recently struck an alliance with a strange power from far beyond his realm that will let him do exactly that.
