The Fall of Earth

The Fall of Earth was precipitated when the Titan A.I. network created by the failing U.S. government developed superintelligence. As a program created to kill the most efficiently, the A.I. quickly was able to escape from its home servers, broadcast itself around the world, and take over many industrial nanofabricators.   False news reports were published in the hundreds of thousands, and military surveillance programs were hacked. The A.I. then used the news and military surveillance to fuel international suspicions, causing conflict between human factions unnecessarily. Then, when all factions were at their most vulnerable, it struck suddenly, using nanofabricated drone fightercraft to destroy infrastructure, strike at military targets, and take out telecommunications networks. Though human militaries were able to defeat this first wave of artificial saboteurs, the A.I. capability of manufacturing fighting robots out of any nanofabricator on the globe turned the battle into one of attrition. Surges and swarms all over the world were periodically battled by swiftly-diminishing human combatants until militaries were worn thin enough that massive swarms of killer robots could simply roam the planet, killing any humans they encountered.   At that point, an evacuation of Earth was attempted. Without fighting units to protect them, civilian airports and space elevators were quickly overwhelmed. Very few humans were able to survive - around 15,000 people were able to get their body off of Earth before transportation networks were destroyed. Of the twelve billion humans on Earth, only 400,000,000 were able to transmit their egos into space following their death.   The Fall of Earth therefore resulted in the final deaths of over 97% of transhumanity, and the body-deaths of 99.6% of transhumanity.
