Local History and Chapter Founding

In M39 439 a previously unstable area of warp space in the distant reaches of Ultima Segmentum calmed sufficiently to allow space vessels to further explore the surrounding area. The Mechanicum was quick to divert one of its many exploration fleets to the area in hopes of finding new worlds to colonize and further evidence of STCs used in the ancient past. A significant amount of new systems were discovered in the area and many suitable candidates underwent intensive terraformation and settlement. Though some had a few primitive human populations, none possessed a technology level approaching the imperium and luckily the area was also relatively free from Xenos habitation. This new area of space was subsequently dubbed the ‘Cyasis’ Sector, composed of six major sub-sectors. Towards the center of the new sector was a system subsequently named “Cyo”, which contained three notable planets suitable for immediate colonization, making it the de-facto sector capital.
The third planet in the Cyo system was a terran like world, which apart from some ancient outposts showed no signs of previous habitation. It contained an overall temperate climate and featured a good mixture of local resources and a biosphere quite comfortable for standard human living. As a result this world quickly evolved into the new capital administrative world of the new sector being subsequently dubbed ‘Cyon’.
Luckily Cyon was spared the destruction of is ecosystem from mass industry and settlement due to the presence of another more suitable world within the system. The fourth planet, named “Naigra” was about the same size as Cyon but due to its much thicker atmosphere had a much higher surface temperature, despite its further proximity from the sun. Huge tectonic activity in the planet’s relatively recent geological past had driven Naigra’s atmospheric greenhouse effect into overdrive and killed nearly all complex life on a planet that by all evidence had once been a paradise. However this also meant there were huge reserves of oil and other important minerals in the planet’s crust in addition to a small cache of undiscovered STCs buried deep in the bowels of an ancient outpost from humanities golden age. Niegra therefore became a focus for most industrial development of the sector under the guidance of the mechanicum with millions of new colonists shipped in to work the ever growing mines, factories and refineries. Naigra quickly became known as the premier exporter of high quality promethium products as well as hardy and skilled workman, accustomed to living in the harsh conditions of a world choked with a thick toxic atmosphere and confined to the many towering refinery cities which dotted the planets small barren continents and large, dead oceans.
One other large moon of the system’s main gas giant was also notable in that it also sported a temperate, habitable climate. Not just this but the relatively small world was practically teeming with life, evidently seeded in the ancient past and terraformed with gigantic machines that now stood rusted almost to nothing. The moon (subsequently named ‘Aria’) was therefore almost perfect for the establishment of an agri world, with its wide fertile plains and small, shallow seas almost perfectly suited for large scale agriculture.
Due to this large abundance of natural resources and its central location, the Cyo system became the hub for all trade across the new sector. However the Imperium was not the only faction who took interest in the region. Within 100 years of first colonization a huge Ork Waagh targeted the sector, with the intent of a war of conquest. The sector struggled to hold off the huge invasion and the war dragged on for decades. It was only the timely intervention of the Praetors of Orpheus chapter as well as a large imperial guard relief force which finally repelled the Orks. It had become clear however that this was unlikely to be the last the sector would hear from the Orks. What’s more due to the destabilization of the region, piracy and rebellion quickly spread through the sector and the threat of a Chaos incursion was never far away.
It was decided therefore that a new chapter of Astartes was needed to stabilize the otherwise remote region and protect it in years to come. Thus in M39 557 the Cyclopes chapter (named after the ancient one eyed giants of Terran myth who created thunderbolts for the gods, signifying their close link with the Ad Mech) was officially founded on the world of Cyon. The Praetors of Orpheus acted as the “parent” chapter and donated the first few veterans and samples of gene seed to start the construction of the chapter. Due to the large presence of the Mechanicum in the area (as well as the Praetors close links with the Ad Mech) the Cyclopes chapter was able to obtain a large amount of new technology quickly. The forges and factories of Naigra quickly started producing the 1500 suits of power armor needed as well as vehicles, weapons and munitions. The Mechanicum even constructed an impressive fortress monastery for them in record time as well as the first few vessels of a chapter fleet, to compliment the already growing forces of Battlefleet Cyasis.   Within three centuries the chapter was fully up to strength (excluding experienced veterans). The chapter was quickly able to stabilize the region and start to embark on more important missions further a field. It is however in the middle years of M41 that the Cyclops chapter’s importance has increased tenfold. With the emergence of the new Tau Empire to the immediate north, the chapter has provided a vital role in halting the rapid expansion of the Tau, particularly to the galactic south. In M41 999 the chapter’s home sub-sector lay directly on the outskirts of the Tau’s third sphere expansion. The arrival of the Tyranids too particularly gave the chapter new importance in the face of the biggest threat to the Imperium (and the galaxy as a whole) since the Horus Heresy. In more recent years the Cyclops chapter and the Tau have decided to keep hostilities against each other to a minimum as long as they work together against the Tyranid hive fleets and the newly strengthened threat of chaos.
