Planet Cyon and Fortress Monastery
Since the initial colonization of the now chapter homeworld of Cyon the population and importance of the planet has rapidly grown. As of the first century of M42 Cyon has a population approaching 8bn, mostly contained in the urban areas, particularly within 3 main conurbations. As most of the landmass is focused near the equator, much of the land is covered in tropical forest, grassland and desert with most of the main human settlements being located in coastal areas or the more temperate northern regions of the main continent. Apart from this difference in landmass placement, the overall environment of Cyon is very close to that of ancient Terra, with a comfortably thick nitrogen/oxygen atmosphere, an active internal geology driving a strong magnetic field, comfortable gravity and large, rich oceans. As a result the planet maintains a balanced mix of different industries which ensure a generally high quality of life for most of its citizens compared with much of the wider imperium. Cyonian orbit is however quite heavily industrialized, serving as a hub for trade with local systems and with its sister planet Naigra, allowing for quick and efficient transport of goods and persons to and from the surface via Cyon’s main orbital spire.
Cyon is ruled over by the imperial governor as the Cyclopes chapter is mostly too busy with the defense of local space to take much interest in the specifics of local politics. The lands of Cyon are further broken up into individual nations who are responsible for their own government but defer ultimate authority to the local imperial governor; a traditionally elected position with a fixed term. The importance of the planet as the trade and administrative hub for the entire sector ensures it is well defended by hundreds of missile silos and defense lasers, both on the ground and on orbital platforms. Cyon also maintains a large, professionally trained PDF force as well as also raising regiments for the Imperial Guard (although most local guard regiments originate on Naigra).
Although the Cyo system can be self sufficient if needed, it enjoys much trade from the surrounding systems. Although as a chapter homeworld Cyon is exempt from the imperial tithe, the planet still contributes a considerable amount of raw materials (mostly guardsmen and medical supplies) to the wider imperium, though under emergency circumstances these are instead put toward the construction/repair of the sector defense infrastructure. The chapter Fortress Monastery of the chapter is located in the center of the large northern peninsula of the main central continent. At this location there is a very large batholithic moor, about 400 miles in diameter. Due to the poor soil and lack of any significant resources this area has received very little habitation. In addition the appalling weather as well as vicious local predators and insects that carry hideous flesh eating diseases, this area is the most hostile on the entire planet. At the approximate centre of the moor rises an unexpected area of extinct local volcanoes. It is in the largest of these that the Cyclopes chapter makes their home. In many ways it is similar in aspect to the Fang on Fenris but nowhere near as large. It still has ample room inside however to house an entire chapter and all their war material. The volcanic granite makes the fortress monastery extremely strong and resilient and banks of void shield cloak the mountain. In addition, rising out of the summits of neighboring volcanoes are many huge defense lasers and missile silos, which spend most of their time concealed under the rocky surface. The bowels of the monetary also play host to the chapter catacombs, where the recovered bodies of the chapter’s fallen are laid to rest. The names of any unrecovered fallen (along with all honors) warriors are instead carved into a gigantic slab of polished basalt.
The chapter also maintains a sizable space platform (the ‘Iron Star’) in orbit above the planet where yet more defenses are housed and is also where the chapter’s fleet rests anchor. Although the chapter is widely known about throughout the local sector, the chapter strives to maintain at least some level of secrecy around the exact location of their fortress monastery. A huge array of jammers conceals any digital emissions that might pinpoint the chapter’s location. Only the highest levels of local government are allowed to know the exact location of the monastery and it is only these who are charged with the important duty of delivering supplies to the chapter.
  Planet Naigra
Naigra does much to support Cyon and the surrounding systems in general with its mineral wealth and large industrial/human output. Rapidly outstripping Cyon in population with mass settlement under the guidance of the ad mech the planet currently maintains a population of around 30bn. Naigra does not fall neatly into standard imperial planet classification, having too low a population to be a true hive world but also not extensive enough in industry to be classed as a forge world, though in both of these categories it far outstrips a normal ‘civilized’ world such as Cyon. In terms of environment it shares little with its sister planet apart from a similar size and surface gravity. Most of the surface is covered in relatively shallow but ultimately life poor oceans, with most of the land masses formed of relatively small, mountainous continents. These too are almost devoid of life beyond a microscopic level or the occasional shrub or small insect or primitive animal that is able to survive in the harsh environment. The atmosphere is thick, making it very uncomfortable to walk around unprotected for any significant length of time at sea level, though at altitude on the continents’ many mountain ranges air pressure is more comfortable. The atmosphere itself is mostly composed of nitrogen, SO2 and CO2 with only trance amounts of oxygen, making breathing masks a necessity for unmodified humans outdoors. The high water content also ensures the planet is almost perpetually shrouded in thick clouds from which acidic rain almost constantly falls.
This atmosphere is a legacy of mass volcanic activity recently in the planet’s geological history, helping to wipe out the majority of its formerly rich ecosystem in the process. This however left behind huge reserves of promethium and precious metals which along with an abandoned ancient human outpost containing several STCs drew the immediate interest of the ad mech. The settlement which developed around this outpost grew to eventually be the largest city on the planet and the primary forge complex of the mechanicum, treating the ancient complex and the subsequently tapped promethium below it as sacred, only to be extracted in limited quantities and refined and blessed to the highest standard. This one source of holy promethium is only used to anoint the most holy machine components, power the most blessed engines or create the most righteous weapons of war. From long co-operation with the ad mech, the cyclops chapter receives almost unprecedented access to this resource. This forge complex and surrounding settlement is home to a small independent force of skitarii and knights, responsible for the defense of the mechanicum and its interests in local space.
Other such settlements sprung up around other sources of natural resources, both on the land or on towering hive like platforms in the planet’s oceans. Many of these latter marine platform complexes also tend to vast stretches of surrounding ocean which is utilized for the mass production of algae used in the synthesis of simple protein food pastes or as bases for chemicals in the planet’s petro-chemical industries. While the majority of promethium sources have subsequently been drained, the planet continues to still extract large amounts of precious metals and certain subterranean crystalline growths unique to the planet, while its forge complexes still maintain the industrial scale and knowhow to produce a large amount of rarer imperial technology, including of course many weapons of war and munitions. Naigran orbit is just as heavily populated and industrialized, maintaining many large mineral refineries for processing asteroid resources as well as an array of well serviced ship yards, also serving as the main base for battlefleet Cyacis.
The people of this world however are also prized as a valuable resource, most possessing a generally high level of technical knowhow from their mostly industrial related professions to the same level as most forge world citizens. As a result many find much demand further afield for engineers, ship crews and are perfect recruits for the adeptus mechanicus. Most of the people here are regarded as dour but hardy with a quiet but near unshakable devotion to the emperor (or omnisiah). All spend their lives living in cramped, sealed habitation units very similar in structure and makeup to the hives on many imperial worlds, leaving many with a desire to leave their cramped confines and explore the rest of the galaxy. These qualities make the general citizenry excellent recruits for the imperial guard and navy, with the Naigran regiments of the former being famed across local space, forming the backbone of almost all large scale imperial ground offences and defenses in the region. These are well known for their imposing black and grey greatcoat armor and rebreathers, developed for fighting in the tough atmosphere of their homeworld but equally as useful on many other harsh locations. Most carry the so named Naigran pattern lasgun, derived from one of the STCs discovered on their homeworld.
  Planet Aria
Aria helps support the other two heavily inhabited worlds and orbital installations in the system with food that cannot be produced more locally. Though a small moon rather remote in system terms, the local environment is almost perfectly adapted for life. Though long abandoned, the moon displays obvious signs of extensive terraformation in the distant past, though such secrets of how to reproduce such a process have long been forgotten. Though the local gravity is about half terran standard, all other conditions are very comfortable for unmodified human habitation. However as most of the planet is covered in wide plains and small, shallow seas most of the environment has been harnessed for mass agriculture and aquiculture. Most of this is highly automated, carried out by large amounts of agri servitors. As a result the overall population is very low at only a few million, with most merely there to oversee the correct operation and maintenance of the automated systems.
Some generally more mountainous regions of the planet have been left relatively untouched, serving as large reserves for the planet’s simple local wildlife and picturesque rural retreats and residences for wealthy tourists and nobles.
One notable feature of the planet is a small local order of the adepta sororitas located in a secluded mountain fortress. This order (known as the ‘order of the Iron Sea’) was established in a rather vain effort to help convert many of the system’s local colonists to the main branch of the imperial faith, rather than its ad mech equivalent. As such the sisters recruited into this order mainly fulfil mostly non-combat roles such as missionaries and doctors, though the order does also maintain a small organization of sisters militant, largely to assist and protect their non-combat partners whilst operating in hostile locations.
