Crownlands

The Crownlands are a kingdom in the world of Milara.   Several millennia ago the lands were ruled by many, all feuding with each other. Chaos reigned supreme and finally the world fell into a centuries long war called the Cove Wars, after the war ended the world was united and under one banner became the Crownlands. One ruler united the land for many years and an age of enlightenment occurred around 8000 years ago, but it was not to last as the court collapsed in the mysterious disappearance of the king, his family and around 100 of his closest advisors and their families. The disappearance of the most influential people in the capital destabilized the Crownlands and once again the kingdom fell into chaos for several hundred years. The Crownlands have had their share of misfortune, often by their own hand. A war around 4000 years ago wiped out large portions of non-typical humanoids, specifically planetouched, beastkin and half races. Over the years the kingdom has stabilized and during the reign of the last two kings the Crownlands have finally known something close to peace. The kingdom's luck can't last forever though can it?

History

On Enrys and the King:

The king was only a prince when Enrys first met him, his name was Amforis and he was spoiled and cruel. Enrys had been sent to Kalispell to learn the arts of healing and also magic in secret. The king at the time, Amforis’ father Colgren, was a staunch advocate for eliminating magic, and Enrys’s quest to learn under his nose was a dangerous one. Shortly after arriving in Kalispell, Enrys accidentally saved the life of the prince and was given a position within the household.

Magic was illegal and Enrys had to hide his form everyone around him, but this was not an easy task for witches, and warlocks, and sorcerers, and hags all wished for the king to be dead, they wished to overthrow the monarchy and put one of their own into power. And so they planned and plotted to kill the king and the prince. And Enrys knew this, he had a connection to the earth, though he was a sorcerer he was adopted by druids and had seen how they had been persecuted. He had seen those of his kind subjugated, imprisoned and killed in numerous horrid ways.

He had faith though that Amforis would not be like his father, Amforis had shown kindness to Enrys and over the years had become less spoiled and cruel, the influence of his secretly magical friend changing his ways and putting him down the right path. Enrys wanted to keep Amforis alive in hopes that he could eventually reveal his magic and change the fate of magic users across the Crownlands. Enrys also knew that even though Colgren would kill him if he was discovered he must keep him alive as well. For if the king was killed by magic it could turn Amforis away from Enrys.

Years passed and Enrys saved the king and prince a dozen times over, fouling the plots of vengeance filled mages and slowly turning Amforis towards a more tolerant mindset. Enrys stopped a manticore, found the cure for a magical disease and stopped an evil hag from charming and marrying the king. Soon Colgren was getting on in his years and he passed. Amforis was crowned king and a more tolerant and kind era was upon the Crownlands. Yet Enrys did not speak of his magic. He had grown to care for the king and could no longer imagine losing the king’s friendship let alone his life in exchange for being able to use his magic freely. It was not till a powerful alliance was formed among several mages that Enrys was forced to make a decision. Gaildwen a powerful wizard turned lich had aligned herself with a young Sorcerer named Everett Willspell who had hope that Enrys would do right by mages but turned bitter with time as the years passed after the new king’s crowning. By combining their powers they raised an army of the dead to lay siege to Kalispell.

Enrys saw a vision of their army and warned Amforis but the knights of the kings army would be no match for thousands upon thousands of undead marching towards Kalispell. Enrys broke and told the king of his powers and together to save the kingdom and their people the made a pact. In the weeks that the undead army marched across the Crownlands towards Kalispell the two ventured off to make a powerful ally. Enrys called upon the aid of a Great Green Wyrm and after Amforis agreed that should he live he would stop persecution of mages should the Wyrm came to their aid. Upon the back of a dragon the size of the castle itself the two flew over the army of undead and rained down flames and spells until the only thing left was unmoving bones.

Seeing the decimation of their army Gaildwen and Everett fled and Amforis and Enrys made chase. The Great Wyrm was wounded and stayed back leaving the two mortals to face off with their enemies. After a grueling battle, Amforis had Everett cornered and ran him through with his blade but before taking his last breath Everett took the kings life and they both fell to the ground. Seeing his king and friend fall Enrys let out a scream that is said to have been heard miles away and with a mighty blast of magic ended Gaildwen. The friends shared a final word before Amforis slipped away. It is said that by the time of the final battle Enrys had become powerful enough to achieve immortality and to this day he wanders the lands waiting for the time when the gods will return his king to him.

Observer's Entry about the Collapse, found in the (LINK)Sky Temple and provided by Emmilyn the Wise:

Immediately afterward, from what it describes, it took about two days for the populace to notice that no one was in the castle. Those first two days, the people who worked there ransacked it in secret and vanished with a lot of really important artifacts and cash. About three days after, people began rioting and trying to break in to see what was left. The Kallispell/Forgeworn government sent out military patrols to find the court. After about 30 days, a paramilitary force occupied the castle and a war for dominance escalated over the next year. This conflict destroyed almost all of the city, except for the castle. It was a warzone. The missing artifacts resulted in a lot of dangerous magic getting used by dangerous people who snapped them up. It took about 400 years for things to stabilize. The castle was retaken by nobles who fled to the mainland, but their families returned and were eventually able to retake the castle and put in place a new system of government.
