Western Commons

"Give thanks to the vast woodlands before you, that smell of honey and song; smell the air and give thanks to the goddess of abundance." - Beynhard the Singer
The Western Commons were a massive geographic region in the southwestern part of Beurum. It was separated from the Northern Commons by the River Halvoy. The area was historically occupied by the Trebai, the Ren Berig

Geography

The defining feature of the Western Commons was its vast areas of rolling hills, covered by temperate forests and scrublands. To the north, the region was bordered by the Northern Commons, and to the west, the Makovai Mountains. To the east and south were two large bodies of water: Obsidian Bay, and the Vagabond's Sea, respectively.   The region was judged by the Trebai to be the best growing area in Atla Vera, due to the freshwater provided by the River Halvoy.   In the southern portions of the region, inhabitants endured hot summers and enjoyed mild winters. This was largely due to the warm ocean currents that ran through the Vagabond's Sea. As one traveled farther north, winters became colder, and snowfall would become increasingly common. During the summer months, the coast was often battered by tropical storms. In the northern reaches of the region, tornadoes sometimes occurred.

Natural Resources

Above all, the Western Commons were known for their grain output. By the Fifth Era, a large portion of the region's woodlands had been cut down to feed a growing population. Among these grains were wheat, barley, millet, calnet, ferr, and tripoden.   In the First Era, the region exported large amounts of timber. However, as the centuries went on and the Western Commons lost much of their forests, logging activities gradually left the region.   Another major activity was the raising of smaller cattle and poultry, especially those that could survive in forested areas. Among these were chickens, turkeys, belvens, hogs, and tour bears. The River Halvoy, as well as many lakes and ponds throughout the Western Commons, also offered copious amounts of fish.   Apart from agriculture, the region also offered vast quantities of iron and copper ore. By the time of the Fifth Era, a vast series of mineshafts ran under the Western Commons.
