Greywatch Keep

"It's an ugly old thing, that's for sure. But the castle's got its charm." - Mallan Wolfram
Greywatch Keep was a fortress that served as the administrative seat of Brooder's Crossing and the surrounding province of Freevern. It was the ancestral home of House Wolfram.

History

The keep was first built following the settling and rapid expansion of Brooder's Crossing in the Fourth Era. It was built on the ruins of an old fortress that was built to defend against Kantaran Invaders, and subsequently destroyed by them. The architects of Greywatch Keep took inspiration from the castle's predecessor.   Economic prosperity, as well as rising tensions with western dwarven kingdoms, especially the Makovai, prompted a new drive for construction and fortification. The keep received three new towers, and the connecting wall that surrounded Brooder's Crossing was strengthened.   In the The Twenty-Year War, during the battle of Brooder's Crossing, much of the castle was destroyed and never rebuilt. With much of the town's population decimated after the war, Brooder's Crossing lost a significant amount of economic power and reconstructing the damaged parts of the fortress was not feasible. New civilian homes were built with the new space as locals moved away from farms in the countryside and into the safety of the city walls. This exodus into the town allowed Bandit groups more power out in the forests, prompting new calls for construction and fortification, this time by the residents of the village.
