The Continent of Valantia

The Year of Valant's Landing 854

Created by

Valantia, or Veligskör, was named after Saint Valant, the saviour of the Arven and the founder of the nation of Estamere. But the continent was inhabited for millennia before the arrival even of the first Arven settlers, over a thousand years ago. Though the name refers to the landmass as a whole, the continent is divided roughly along the equator by a wide stretch of desert land known as Nesampotam. Strange equatorial weather has always inhibited travel to the southern hemisphere by sea, and the dense, ozone-rich air and desiccating sandstorms makes the region nearly impossible to traverse overland - not to mention stories of strange, titanic creatures wandering the wasteland. The north of the landmass is, therefore, mostly isolated.

Comprised of roughly 17,820,000 square kilometers, the continent is divided by the large inland Redon Sea and the great, landlocked lake, Lake Marrion. Geologically, the continent is incredibly active, with volcanoes and fault lines having created vast mountain ranges, long chains of islands and enormous gulfs where the land slowly pulls itself apart. Its human history is as tumultuous as its natural history, and equally shrouded in mystery and mystique. Though modern science seeks to understand every element of the natural world, some aspects remain as of yet unexplained. That which some people still call "magic", can be found in scattered pockets of the continent; whether it be the strange, ancient Bonesong structures of Talloni, Vakos, and Zerul in the west; the sand-swimming spirits of the Domazi Empire in the south; or the ethereal waters and telepathic tribes of Allésai in the east.

For all its beauty and harmony, there are equal amounts of chaos and strife. Though there are temperate climes and arable lands on either side of the Redon coast, life elsewhere is often harsh, and the people no less so. Ancient grudges refuse to die in Valantia, and wars rage between emergent superpowers. The Sachonn nations have always fought among themselves and with the Arven in the north. The newly united Domazi Empire threatens the existence of the Eos Crown Union, who vie for control of land and resources with the Affrian Republic caught in between their conflict. Most recently the United Tribes of Allésai has failed, and fallen into civil war, and all the while the smaller nations seize opportunities to amass wealth and power where borders remain undefended.

Though the Eos Crown Union has ushered in an age of industrial revolution, the rest of the world is catching up as science and technology is innovated across the globe. The continent of Ellenia, from where the Eos and Arven originally hailed many centuries ago, is an ever increasing presence in the West as means to sail across the Astecian Ocean becomes quicker and simpler. As technology looms on the horizon to pass the equator, a new race has begun to be the first to explore, or perhaps exploit, what awaits in the south.

But there are other threats, closer to home, as industry threatens the delicate balance of the natural world and ravages the connection between humans and the elements. The threat is felt keenly by those in tune with such connections, but they are few and far between, and the wealth to be gained far outweighs any notion to quell the march of progress.

And with all the political machinations and technological advances, there are those who sit behind the curtain, and gently tug at the strings. Few know who they are, and questions of what role they play, what affiliations they have, and what agenda they are beholden to, are known to fewer still...
