Nilfjord
In the north-east of Arvendell is the country of Nilfjord. Nilfjord has the lowest population density of all the Arven nations, owing to its vast swathes of uninhabitable lands, specifically the steep canyons that form the fjords in the north, and the frozen wastes of Northsword in the east, battered by the frozen winds coming in from the ocean. The vast majority of the population live in the central region of Veli, where many small rivers have, over time, carved an expansive system of hills and valleys which protect it from the worst of the northern weather. The valleys also serve to trap warm air and moisture, and as such Veli is one of the wettest regions in all of Arvendell. That said, it is also one of the more verdant in the north, and the landscape's natural drainage has prevented the ground from turning to unpurchaseable bogs, or else arid heathland.
In the south of Veli, the Black Cliffs drop sharply down into Lake Weissa, home to the legendary Osvallargareth, a radical denomination of the Skal faith, who are in equal parts devoted monks and fierce warriors. The Osavallargareth are among the few who also frequent the furthest reaches of the eastern region of Northsword, or Nordkvöst, where they often make pilgrimage to meditate and hunt. The land of Northsword is harsh and icy, and home to some of the most dangerous creatures in all of Arvendell - fell bears, vicious packs of Kvösten wolves, and the deadly Hellwyrm.
Nilfjord shares an island with Skalbaard, and though they form the two most traditional of the Arven nations, one fundamental disagreement has led to a series of bloody conflicts over the years. Nilfjord is a land of revolution, and were the first to overthrow their tyrannical monarchy in 675, sparking a revolution that swept throughout Arvendell and resulted in the formation of the Arven Kinship. Nilfjord is also the only true democracy, with Lord Electorates voted into power through voting, occurring once every five years. To maintain the fairness of the system, it is also the only Arven nation to disallow Ritualistic Combat to take the place of a Lord Electorate. The Electorate also need not be a Clan leader, and needs no ties to a High Clan to run. Nilfjord remains a market economy, however, and so those with land and wealth tied to their heritage, especially those associated with various guilds across the small nation, have significant sway in parliamentary matters.
