Playable Races of Evandru

The master list of Evandru's playable races; their ratings are (mostly) negotiable.

Tired of wondering which races will fit into Evandru's setting? Well, this article has the answers! Below is a table with all 42 official D&D 5e races. Homebrew races (with some very rare exceptions) are not allowed, mostly due to their complexity and my (the DM's) unfamiliarity with them.   Races with their names in bold have additional information listed in another article. Races with their names in italics are extinct or otherwise unplayable. Races accompanied with the phrase "in memoriam" in parenthesis are dedicated to the DM's past experiences and are therefore unplayable.

"Over the last few millennia, dozens of races have called the peninsula of Evandru their home; beginning with the tribal genasi, children of the earth, to the resilient humans from beyond. Great nations have come and gone like tidal waves, their influence sweeping across the world like a tsunami and leaving naught but innovation in their wake. Though every race is undeniably stubborn in their own right, their continued cooperation with one another is the hallmark of their very existence..."

Q&A About Evandru's Races

To make sure everyone gets their more important questions answered in a timely manner, I've put together this small (and somewhat sassy) Q&A to eliminate common questions.
- Azaelic, the DM

Q: Why can I "just not" play certain races, like gith? A: Because I said so. Do you really want to play a gith or vedalken? Like, before I made this list I'd never even heard of those races. Nuh-uh.   Q: Why do certain races require the DM's approval? A: Some races are extraordinarily rare, and I'd rather know so I can account for player-specific encounters beforehand. In addition, my world is constantly changing and evolving. If there's an update on the lore of one of these races, those players will need to work around that with me. Other races involving the use of lineages is difficult for me to understand as well. Unless the player has figured it out themselves and can present a well-balanced character, I'm gonna put a soft ban on it.   Q: If I come up with a good explanation to play an off-limits race (for example, a half-orc, vedalken or kalashtar), can I break their player off-limits rule? A: Sadly, no. Races like the kalashtar are off-limits simply because I don't want them in my world. This can be for a number of reasons, the most common of which being I don't see them existing in my campaign's setting. In the kalashtar's case, I couldn't find a reasonable explanation for their spiritual connection in my universe. It was cool, sure, but really out of place. I've already covered my distaste for the vedalken, but really rare races are off-limits because it's just not practical for them to join an adventuring party. Most very rare races in Evandru have more important things to worry about, like assuring the survival of their race.   Q: This looks like fantasy racism. Is this just racism? A: Yeah. Whatcha gonna do 'bout it?   Any more questions? Just leave a comment below, and I'll try to answer them as quickly as possible!

(P) Races in Order of Rarity

Too lazy to scroll through an entire table of races to look for the playable ones? Don't worry, I am too. Keep in mind this list doesn't denote race-specific requirements, such as the DM's approval. Still too lazy to look for that after finding your race? Well too bad, use CTRL + F then.
