Chapter 1: The Mysterious Chest

Employees of the White Wolf Network have only a 3 rules to follow in their magical item smuggling operation:   1. No Moving People 2. No Unnecessary Damage 3. Don't Get Caught   Giovanni "The Bug", their boss, entrusts our party with a mysterious chest and instructs them to throw it into the Illyrian river waterfall. He tells them he was given the chest by a strange woman who seemed very eager to be rid of it. The only rule for this delivery was DO NOT OPEN THE CHEST.   Our party sets off through the Springwood which leads into the South Eastern part of the Illyrian woods where the waterfall resides. They travel across a great bridge near the ruins of an old city and spot five goblins destroying a wagon. No bodies, no horse, but the goblins had torn the carriage to pieces.   Sneaky Pete snuck closer on the bridge to see how many there were and then called the group over to strategize their next move. Swiftly they killed four of them and watched as one ran away towards a more solid piece of the ruins. Astalier sent his raven to fly over where the goblin ran in order to see what was ahead.   An enormous goblin encampment lay ahead and the party quickly found cover before the run away could send the rest of his clan after them. The gobins took a cautious approach to attacking and our party managed to take them out one by one. Alanna had fallen unconscious during the combat, but Guldur quickly came to her aid.   The party rested for a short while then returned back to the cart to see if anything of value was left. They found nothing but they did notice something odd. The cart had come from the town of Greenlit and had strange fire damage to the cart. Alanna and Sneaky Pete determined that it must have been some kind of magical fire and that the cart was traveling away from it at the time of impact.   Continuing forward the party spotted a single goblin atop the second bridge that led to the path. Sneaky Pete crept beneath the bridge, then swung atop it and killed the goblin in one blow. As the rest of the party rejoined with him, he discovered a pouch of gold and other shining trinkets that was kept next to the goblins spot. They also found a small note written in goblin. Perhaps it had been a toll to prevent what was to come? Who knows? Not this party that's for sure.   They approached the pass and Astalier sent his raven to fly above to scout for anything suspicious. Immediately he spots several goblin archers and two shamans waiting above the path. Our group finds strategic cover but unfortunately Alanna was seen by one of the goblin archers.   He asked for a password. She answered "Horses are tasty." He screamed and the combat began. Apparently that was not the password.   Sneaky Pete takes an archer out quickly, but Astalier was unfortunate to discover that the goblin shamans here were much more powerful than the ones they had fought before. He was sent almost to his knees by a bolt of lighting, but managed to return fire with a hellish rebuke. Guldur ran to his friends aid to heal him, but even more unfortunately the two were caught by a fire ball.   This fireball was strange though. It had streaks of black running through it and had a strange feeling to it. Just as strange as the fireball itself, the caster also was engulfed in flame and was burnt to ash. The two were taken down and lay helpless on the ground as one of the goblin archers looted their bodies.   Sneaky Pete dove across the pass, taking a goblin out on the way. He quickly realized his error as thee of the archers took aim and fired at him and injured him with arrows. He returned to his position in cover, but not before slaying the second of the goblin shamans.   The battle raged on with Alanna peppering the goblins with crossbow bolts from cover, eventually growing impatient and using her sword and magics to dispatch the last of them.   Astalier was found to be dead next to the unconscious body of Guldur. After some brief words Alanna and Sneaky Pete retrieved Guldur and put him in their cart and tossed Astalier's still warm corpse into the river.   As they travelled closer to their destination they came across another person. He was making his way away from the town of Greenlit, his clothes singed by fire. After being warned about the goblins ahead he decided to stick with the group.   They made their way up to the great waterfall. As Alanna took the chest off her back they all heard a small cry from inside. Sneaky Pete easily unlocked the chains holding it closed and inside was a small baby! Black hair, blue eyes, and pink skin the little baby seemed relatively unharmed.   When they lifted him from the chest they discovered that the baby also had a set of featherless wings upon his little back and a slender demonic tail. Perhaps this was why the city of Greenlit was under attack?   Whatever the reason, they refused to kill the child and instead filled the chest with rocks and dropped it into the river vowing to find whoever it was that wanted this boy dead.   Shortly thereafter they were joined by a fellow agent of the White Wolf Network, Carlos. Carlos had been sent to warn them of the increasing goblin attacks on the road to the waterfall and was concerned when he found Guldur, unconscious in a cart on the road with no companions to be seen.   Waking his fellow agent, he learned about the fate of Astalier and was told where his companions may be. Guldur and Carlos traveled toward the waterfall to find Alanna, Pete, and a the new traveler named Theren discussing what they should do with the baby. Pete and Alanna found themselves in a heated argument about the fate of the child as Carlos pulled the chest from the water to inspect the runes.    The chest had been carved with runes to keep the baby sedated as they took it to the waterfall as well as a scroll of silence placed on the inside to keep all noise from escaping. Choosing to take this matter up with "The Bug", the group returned to Red Hawk.    Clearly angered by his rules being broken, "The Bug" insisted his employees find the woman who brought the child to him. He described her as wearing a purple cloak and seemed desperate to be rid of the chest. He tasked the group with finding this woman and bringing her to him to have a "discussion" about she had done. Taking the baby into his care, he sent them out to the town of Greenlit.   As the group approached Greenlit they saw a dome of magical darkness cast over the area. Inside, the town still burned and was overrun with Imps and fire elementals. The demons didn't attack however, insisting that the master would decide the fate of these adventurers.   Guldur spoke to one of the Imps and gained a friendship of sorts with it. He deceived the Imp into believing the other in his group were captives to  be taken to the master and gained safe passaged towards the burning keep. Joined by Carlos, the two braved the flames to speak with the demon lord.   Abezthibou sat atop a giant throne, lazily reading from a tome. Next to him seated on the arm of the throne was a woman in a red dress with a purple cloak under her legs. Carlos and Guldur approached cautiously and fell to their knees in respect to the great demon lord.   Abezthibou approached them and asked what they wanted from him and with an attempt to lie to the demon, Guldur informed him that a chest that belonged to the demon was seen in Grand Airon. Quickly seeing through this ruse the demon seemed to get annoyed.   Effie, the woman identified to be the mother of the child and 39 of the Demon's other children, approached after being spoken to by Carlos. With a mad look in her eyes she readily admitted that she was aware of what was in the chest and who had deceived "The Bug". Carlos asked that the group could meet with her at a later point and she agreed.    Becoming even more annoyed, Abezthibou tired of this pointless conversation and destroyed the ground beneath the group. They fell down into a crumbling hole in the earth and landed in an unknown cave. High walls with glowing mushrooms and a distinct damp smell surrounded them.    Taking the lead, Theren guided the group forward in the darkness. After travelling a short way, he noticed a diverging path. To their right was a better lit path which ensured they wouldn't be surprised, but they also were revealed to any enemies. To their left a dark path where sneaking was easier, but there was an element of unknown in the darkness.   Spotting three Carrion Crawler larvae ahead, Theren informed the group and they discussed what was to be done next. Carlos suggested they attempt a volley to take out as many of the larvae as possible in case they needed to return this way. The group agreed and prepared their attack.
