Solemnity (often called 'Sol') is a participant of the gauntlet in Team One. Arrested for manipulating numbers during his work as an accountant and statistician for the governor, Solemnity is cerebral and socially anxious, apparently ill-suited to the gauntlet and constantly terrified for his life. Despite this, he is exceptionally intelligent, which has become apparent as the games have continued; he speaks several languages fluently and is a brilliant mathematician. Solemnity's unusual past led him to be given up by his birth parents and somehow relocated to the Seelie Court, where he was later adopted by two western women and forged close family ties with several fey, including Elegast/Erik, Team Ten's main point of contact with the court. Sol insists that his inclusion in the games was a genuine coincidence and that he was not planted as a spy. His scepticism about Ash has led him to recommend to the fey they make another deal with a separate candidate in order to hedge their bets, which they have done in the form of Zhou . Fiercely ideological, Solemnity believes firmly in toppling Regent Sai, but favours a more moderate transition of power, creating a council to run the Empire and begin the shift into democracy rather than the great revolution envisioned by Ash.
