Character Types

This goes into the general discussion of character types in the setting. It supports the content already found in the Cypher Systems Core Book and Numenera Discovery.   This document is a work in progress.   As it states in Numenera Discovery:   Character type is the core of your character. Your type helps determine your character’s place in the world and relationship with other people in the setting. It’s the noun of the sentence “I am an adjective noun who verbs.”

Warrior

  A warrior in the world of Horizon Zero Dawn is very similar to the Warrior specified on page 22 in the Cypher System Rulebook. It's also very similar to the Glaive specified on page 28 in the Numenera - Discovery book. Use that as your source of inspiration and reference. We'll only be posting small distinctions here that are specific to the Setting. The example below uses one of the characters from the game as an example.  

Example

The character of Rost in the game is the perfect example of a warrior. Following the character building statement "I am an adjective noun who verbs", we could simply define Rost as "I am an Outcast Warrior who Honors the Tribe". Let's break that down in an example of how one would build out the character. We'll use the Glaive stats from the Numenera - Discovery book as our starting point.   The Player wants to create a Warrior character based on Rost. Rost is fast and strong but he his an aging warrior. The player will put 4 of their additional points into Rost's Might Pool and 2 into his Speed Pool; his stat Pools are now Might 15, Speed 12, Intellect 7. As a first-tier character, Rost's Effort is 1, his Might Edge and Speed Edge are 1 and his Intellect Edge is 0. Rost is not particularly smart or charismatic.     The Player wants Rost to use a Spear (a medium weapon that inflicts 4 points of damage) and a Bow (a medium weapon that inflicts 4 points of damage but requires the use of both hands). Using the Glaive as a basis for Rost, he gets the ability Combat Prowess (which grants a +1 damage to a type of attack of the Player's choice: Melee or Ranged). The Player chooses Melee and gains a +1 damage to the use of any melee weapon.    The Player decides wear light armor and picks Hides and Furs for 1 point of Armor. Typically wearing light armor would have a Speed Effort Additional Cost of 1, but because Rost is based upon a Glaive he gains the ability Trained With Armor (which reduces the Speed Effort Cost for wearing Armor by 1). So wearing light armor doesn't have an impact on Speed Checks for Rost.   Using the Glaive grants Rost two Fighting Moves at Tier 1. For Tier 1 Fighting Moves, the Player chooses to use the Tier 1 Special Abilities from the Warrior Type in the Cypher System Rulebook 
  • For the first fighting move, the Player chooses Control the Field. When the Player uses this ability, Rost will spend 1 point from his Might Pool and lose 1 point of damage from the attack if it succeeds. However, Rost maneuvers his opponent into a position the Player desire within Immediate Range.
  • For the second fighting move, The Player chooses Extra Edge to personify Rost's experience as a Warrior. Rost gains +1 in both Might and Speed Edge.
  The Glaive’s starting equipment includes two cyphers, and the GM decides that Colin’s cyphers are a pill that restores 6 points of Might when swallowed and a small device that explodes like a firebomb when thrown, inflicting 3 points of damage to all within immediate range. Colin chooses swimming for his trained physical skill.   The Player still needs to choose a descriptor and a focus. Looking ahead to the descriptor rules, the Player chooses Outcast, which increases his Might Pool to 17. He also becomes trained in survival skills (foraging, hunting and finding safe places) and sneaking. Being Outcast also bestows an Inability that increases the difficulty by one step of any social interaction. Rost can also not benefit from any assistance from the members of the tribe he was outcast from.   For Rost's focus, the Player chooses Honors the Tribe. This grants Rost Tribal Knowledge, which when used as an Action allows the Player to ask the GM about the tribe that Rost was Outcast from. This would help Rost serve the needs of the tribe from from afar. Rost is also granted Tribal Activist, which enables him to be trained in social interactions when working on behalf of the tribe he was banished from.   The Player's character Rost is a deadly warrior who can survive in the wild and work towards the benefit of the tribe from afar.
