Norse

Most often known in the Breton Lands as "Danes" the Norsemen were the North Germanic peoples of the Early Middle Ages, during which they spoke Old Norse and practiced the Old Norse religion.   During the late eighth century, Norsemen embarked on a large-scale expansion in all directions.   The period from the earliest recorded raids in the 790s until the Norman conquest of England in 1066 is commonly known as the Viking Age.

Family names

Norsemen didn't know last names in the same way as many of us do now.   Instead of an actual name, they would usually refer to people as son of or daughter of, hence why the last names all end in either son (son of) or dottir (daughter of).
