Belit

"It seems apt to compare Hectys to a belit. Fat, soft and exceedingly average."
— Merchant Prince Calataeo
The fruit of the sungold bree, belits are used throughout Thripia and accompany most meals, typically among the poorer classes. Due to its watery consistency, lightness and relatively weak flavor, it is often used as a palette cleanser or an after-eating refreshment.

Appearance

Belits are round and bulbous at the base of the fruit, narrowing to a short tube-like end at the top from which the stalk grows and hangs from the tree. Their skin, though lumpy and irregular, is exceptionally glossy in texture and has a yellow color. The fruit's flesh is white and thick with a hollow chamber in the middle which contains a stalk holding sungold seeds.

Properties

In taste, the flesh of a belit is described as watery and soft, with fibers prone to getting caught in teeth. Beyond that, it has little in the way of taste and is not very filling, though this makes it ideal as a refreshment for after a meal. Additionally, belits last a remarkably long time before becoming rotten, making them useful for long journeys, especially ones where food and water are scarce. Radon tribe caravans are known to purchase them in relatively large quantities upon arriving in Thripia. Belit peel, though on its own sour and rough, is often preserved in salt, causing it to become soft and allowing it to last almost indefinitely. Often, it is served as a side to food.   The seeds within the stalk, when planted, grow sungold trees. They are eaten by birds and land-dwelling animals who disperse them through defecation. Interestingly, all attempts to use belit seeds to grow sungolds in soil other than on the banks of the Meleatte River have all failed, though scammers will often attempt to sell them to naive traders nonetheless.
