The Sailborne

In the aftermath of the mage war, which ended nearly half a millennia ago, in a time when the world was clawing it's way back from destruction, a few of the shrewder captains of the day saw the need for stability, they came together to found an agreement, a union that would later become a sort of family. They would protect each other since their respective nation no longer had the strength to do so. They took on the name of Sailborne Alliance, a family of those who were carried by the wind and see, and their movement grew. What started as 17 signatures quickly became a vast organisation almost akin to a religion that spanned most of the entire disc.
There are many tenants to their belief, nowadays there are even factions within factions, and disagreements about their laws, but the two central principles that all factions share are these :
First, always help a fellow Sailborne if they ask for it and you are able to give it. Even if you hate the person. What goes around comes around, and in time, the kindness you share will return to you with interest. "Together we are an unstoppable typhoon, alone we are a fart in the wind, so let us stand together friends and forge our own future based not on greed but on our shared love of the sea" - Captain Dura'hin Rocksmasher, One of the 17 founders.
Second, loyalty to the Sailborne family before all else. If you leave to join with pirates or slavers, if you take up arms against one of our own. You will be exiled for ever, marked and sometimes even hunted. "We may be employed as mercenaries for the world will always have need of paid fighters, but we do not fight our own. If they wish our blood to be spilled they can try to spill it themselves and may they cower in fear and regret as the ocean itself rises up to fight them" - Captain Emilia Silverhawk, One of the 17 founders.
As time passed the world found it's way back to some form of normality and the leaders of the family knew that even the most hardy of sailors need a place to call home sometimes. A place to build and repair ships, a place to store their earnings, to raise children and as they grew old, retire. A deal was struck with the city of Geldris, in exchange for a favourable trade deal, they would concede ownership of a number of Islands south of them.
