The Black Gate

No one knows who or what built these dread inspiring massive gates. Blacker than black the gates actively drinks all nearby light shrouding the surrounding area in perpetual gloom even at noon.
Thankfully, such an ominous place dwells on the very outermost edge of the civilized world. The mournful toll of these black gates can be heard from leagues away. Spawning nightmares and tenacious insipid dread.
Revealing glimpses of the Detestable Valley and its myriad of horrors not quite concealed by fog. The known world is grateful indeed that these nightmarish gates have stood stalwart against the ages unbound and unbroken.
For all that crosses its threshold has never returned. Nothing of this most cursed valley has ever crossed over.
Until, now. The armies of the dead have within the last century have begun to snatch the unlucky living and drag them screaming beyond those gates into the fog.

Purpose / Function

The Purpose of The Black Gate seems to be incredibly simple. To keep whatever dwells beyond those gates in the detestable valley and keep everything else out. A near perfect function that only the superbly foolish, or the damned seem immune.
