Salon

Salon (pronounced "sal-on") is the second largest city in the Berytusian Empire, and the capital city of Pelagasia. Founded during the Age of Amellion, Salon has been the seat of academic learning in the Inner Sea region for almost its entire history. Its preeminence was eclipsed by Berytus with the rise of Emuna, but Salon has always held a special place in learning and culture. Its most famous location is the Academy of Salon, which has operated continuously since 1027 AB, producing scholars, artists, and poets.
Salon was previously the capital of the Kingdom of Pelagasia from 456 AB until the conquest of Pelagasia in 17 IB. The colossal Temple of Salon, originally constructed for the worship of the goddess Cytheria, was rededicated as a church of the Heliand in 18 IB, and has functioned as the cathedral-seat of the Elder of Salon since then. More elders of Salon have gone on to become Metropolitan than from any other sedes. Its reputation for intellectuals has also resulted in the gifted from across the Matre Sea gathering in the city, hoping to strike it rich by inventing some valuable innovation.
Much of the architecture of the city dates back to before the Age of Man, and the layout of the city has been maintained consistently. The Magnificent Walls of the city were constructed by the Amellion King Halamar in 145 AB, and strike awe into most contemporary observers. About half the city is of human construction, particularly the Mani District built outside the walls to the north of the harbor. Many Salon architects have been influenced by the Amellion designs throughout the city, and some trends in Imperion architecture are traced back to these influences. An emphasis on arches and fractal patterns especially has been noted.
